Betsy DeVos and the twilight of public education

Stephen Henderson , Detroit Free Press Editorial Page Editor

In Detroit, parents of school-age children have plenty of choices, thanks to the nation’s largest urban network of charter schools.

What remains in short supply is quality.

In Brightmoor, the only high school left is Detroit Community Schools, a charter boasting more than a decade of abysmal test scores and, until recently, a superintendent who earned $130,000 a year despite a dearth of educational experience or credentials.

On the west side, another charter school, Hope Academy, has been serving the community around Grand River and Livernois for 20 years. Its test scores have been among the lowest in the state throughout those two decades; in 2013 the school ranked in the first percentile, the absolute bottom for academic performance. Two years later, its charter was renewed.

    1. Goodnpw we can complain about charter schools.

I’d Hillary had won we would havce been saddled with cheering for the wonderful charter. Ask any teacher which the prefer.  Start there and then we can talk. President Obama’s Education Nerd supports poublic schools!

What we neexd are equal schools. If Newport Beach offers music and advanced classes Santa Ana should do the same. Education should not be bvasecx in whether you live in a rich neighborhood as it is now!

      4. If HRC had won,

I wouldn’t have been cheering her neo-liberal policies, which has earned me the hate of so many people at DU.  I’m not a cheerleader.  It’s why I’m a political lone wolf.

Interestingly, in many years discussing education there, I can think of only one person who consistently and staunchly supports charter schools.  That would have changed, to be sure.

I am so totally appalled by this appointment that I can’t bring myself to read much about it.  Is there an organized opposition yet?  As voters, we must call our senators and voice our opposition to DeVos’s confirmation.

        7. "only one person who consistently and staunchly supports charter schools"

        a poster or a politician?

          8. A poster.

I haven’t spent much time in the ed forum there since I was outed by my union president and roundly scolded for talking about the corporate reforms coming through my district; I’ve yet to figure out how she knew, since I never indicated state, let alone district or school.  At that point, some of us (teachers) set up a private FB group to talk education safely.

Anyway, that poster’s handle started with an M…if I saw it, I’d know it in an instant.

            9. wow. that's cold — and why would a union pres do such a thing? sounds

like she was actually on the other side, maybe?  (don’t tell anybody about the shitstorm coming…)

it’s stuff like that that makes me feel like a conspiracy nut — a lot of the folks who are theoretically on our side — aren’t really.  it’s crazy-making because you don’t even know who to trust — if anyone.

              10. I believe

that she, and some others, WERE on the other side for awhile, tempted by “new” “reforms” that brought grants and dollars into the budget.

To give her, and her other 2 minions, credit, they changed their tune a couple of years later when they saw how those “reforms” were really working.  Still, it was painful, and also kind of creepy; how did they know who an anonymous poster on DU who never mentioned a state, town, or district…how did they know how to single out that one single person (me)?

                11. maybe it was coincidental? i don't know, but if it wasn't some kind of

                coincidence, it’s creepy all right

I’ve had intimations like that myself, nothing definitive though

    2. The multi-level marketing of education

I’m going to have to start going by the title Superintendent GZeus and recruit some principals so I can have commissions from three levels coming in.

    5. that entire family = garbage imo. their original claim to fame (amway)

= fraudulent criminal garbage, their subsequent actions (uniformly right wing bullshit) = garbage, their pretensions to high IQs etc = garbage, and their spawn and their successor companies (e.g. blackwater/whatever its new name this week is) = garbage.

may the entire family get caught in a local earthquake and swept down into a faultline — at a new years party in their latest over-large, pretension “family home”/
