I love you all but I'm still blind!

I can handle the short sharp shock (and 140 characters of Twitter) but I’m still kinda unable to read too long. But as proof of my undying love for you all I’m sharing this awesome version of “Rocket Man” with y’all.

    Miss you all!!! xoxoxoxoxo

      5. Fetchez la vache!

You’ll be forced to regain eyesight to see that sight!

Well, that sucks. My understanding is that this is temporary? I hope?

I think I mentioned I have a college buddy at Brigham & Women’s who one of the most highly-regarded MS guys around (whether he’s actually good or not, I have no idea). If you ever want an “in”, let me know – I’ll tell him if you don’t get all better right away, I’ll tell his wife some frat stories that I’m sure he hasn’t told her.

I also know a neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconness who’s an asshole, if that would work better for you.

        20. You didn't miss a thing!

The touch and go vision is because of the MS – it’s a common problem called optic neuritis.  It should be temporary, and sometimes I suddenly will get my vision back for a couple of days.  I’m probably in a flare because it’s been an issue for some time now, but I haven’t had it this bad before.

Most of the time I can handle it but sometimes I open my eyes, can only see about half of what I normally see, and it upsets me, mostly when I let myself think I’m going blind permanently.

            53. I listen to a lot of books on "tape" or whatever

There are a lot of audiobooks on youtube believe it or not.  And the good thing about my television entertainment proclivities is that since I tend to watch history and science documentaries, I don’t really need to watch. Hearing it is all I need.

I’m also enjoying listening to my wonderfully talented husband play guitar or mandolin every night.

              63. I didn't realize audio books was available on youtube.

I guess like music you have to search by author or title (or both)..

I was wondering how you managed to read and respond to jpr forum. thinking you might be using voice command for reading and texting?

I play mandolin too,  and fiddle. what genre is he into?

                68. Jazz & bluegrass mostly

He fiddles around with Irish fiddle tunes too, and does classical guitar a lot (it’s what he played as a child). He majored in Jazz Studies at Rutgers so that’s his “real” genre but he also played in a Dead tribute band for 15 years.  He’s all over the place.

I can see to read but not well and I have a lot of pain in my eye when I do so i just read in spurts. That’s why the audiobooks help. You can just search “audiobooks” and the subject and you’ll get a lot.

                Here’s one I’m listening to right now – a little light “reading”…:)

                  69. awesome thank you!

I attempted to search for free audiobooks on my smart phone when I was away from home and didn’t have a gook with me.   couldn’t find free source.  might have been I didn’t search youtube.  thank you for that tip!

mandolin was my first instrument, at 30 years old!  learned by ear. then I decided to try my hand at the fiddle since the two instruments are tuned similarly. I love both instruments for different reasons.  mostly play Irish and Scottish, but I love Cajun,  Old Timey,Bluegrass as well as Quebecois.  So many tunes, so little time.  :hi:

        39. Titty squeeze! Yes please!

2 of my very best friends in the world happen to be gay men and I spend an awful lot of time with them. I get titty squeezes from one of them all the time (“If you didn’t let me do this I’d never know the wonder of boobs”) but he always grabs me from behind and even though I KNOW he’s going to do it eventually it always catches me unawares, which causes hysterical laughter for all of us. How could I be so surprised every time? I’m like this one…

My stupid ex-husband thought one of them was faking being a gay man just so he could have unfettered access to boobs. SMH. Yeah, that seems like a sound strategy for coping a feel, fake being gay.

        54. Thanks, you're pretty good yourself LOL!

I got an extra thrill today because Werner Hertzog and my favorite art critic “liked” a couple of tweets.

My life has come to this. I wish I could be pithy and concise in real life. Alas…alas…

      56. Hang in there. You' re loved and missed

And who knows what tomorrow will bring?

My spouse was blind from December 2005; it happened almost overnight. And so many people said really dumb things like “Blind people can be productive, in this day and age.”

Sure a blind guy or lady is productive —  if they know Braille… and if they have a support system in place. But to be middle aged or older and suddenly have the lights go out is so very troubling. How do you use your phone? Or find a person’s address or phone number? And what is it like to not be able to drive!!!

The spouse went from a very good job, to unemployed to blind, and we had just moved from where he might have walked places to the boondocks where a car was needed…

And then neither the nurses or doctors told him his cataracts could be removed. I thought they had, so I never mentioned it. Luckily someone at Kaiser called and balled him out for not scheduling the cataract operation.

So dorkzilla, I wish we lived close enough that I could try and be a support to you.

        57. I'm the first to say sorry

There are things we must all go through.

          59. If I won the lottery, I would do everything I can to

Support orgs that work with the blind. I had never really thought about having my sight before. It was something I took for granted. But now I think about it all the time. And after the operations on his eyes, M. sees better than he did as a HS football player.

And there are many older people out there who don’t have any way to arrange for the $ 16,000 per eyeball cataract operation. So they live in   this modern tech advanced society and have to endure several decades of blindness because they were uninsured when it happened. To me, that is just so unacceptable.

Our silver lining was that we had arranged for COBRA coverage; otherwise I don’t know if we’d have been lucky enough to get the operation.

        62. Honestly, I'm terrified

99% of the time eyesight is restored and I’m sure I will be one of them, but there is always that slimmest chance that eventually I will go blind permanently. I would rather lose my ability to walk, talk (a lot of people would be grateful if that happened!) or almost any other thing except sight (I’d be gutted to lose my hearing too). The thought of not being able to see my favorite pieces of art or not being able to see new pieces, new sunsets…it’s just to cruel to contemplate.

The small city I work in just outside of Manhattan is home to a big Guiding Eyes training facility and while I was outside the restaurant I saw two blind women working with their new dogs along with the dog’s trainers. My one consoling thought watching them was “well, at least I’ll get another Lab!”.

          65. Mark said what he had missed the most

Was seeing people’s faces. It really is so much to be living without.

And for an art lover like yrself who is more acute to the visual it is especially tragic. PM me if there is anything we can do on our end to help out.

        61. Aw, that's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me!

Usually all I get is “SCRAM, YOU SCREWBALL”!!!

Thank you for that Octafish <3
