Netanyahu calls for pardon of Israeli soldier convicted of manslaughter

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has joined the chorus of right wing Israelis calling on the Israeli president to pardon a soldier convicted of manslaughter after shooting dead an already neutralized Palestinian attacker last March.

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled that Sgt. Elor Azaria had violated the military’s open fire regulations when he shot dead Abdel Fattah Sharif, who had attacked IDF soldiers in the West Bank city of Hebron.

At the time of the fatal shooting in the head, which was captured on camera, the Palestinian assailant had already been immobilized and posed no danger to the public or the Israeli soldier, contrary to defense claims which said that Sharif posed an immediate danger.

“His motive for shooting was that he felt the terrorist deserved to die,” chief judge, Col. Maya Heller, said delivering the. Azaria now faces 20-year behind bars for manslaughter. While the defense team said they would appeal the verdict, Netanyahu urged Israeli president Reuven Rivlin to pardon the soldier.

    1. Of course he will be pardoned. This is sick.

He shot a wounded man who was already on the ground IN THE
HEAD! And Netanyahu wants to pardon him. Pin a medal on the bastard while you are at it.

    5. Prosecutors originally wanted to file murder charges against the dirtbag

and rightfully so, if you’ve seen the video.

    • “His motive for shooting was that he felt the terrorist deserved to die.”

    —  The definition and elements of “manslaughter” must be quite different to those in the U.S.

        8. YouTube – good for the soul

Thank you –  I know there are a number of groups founded by people who are Jewish and/or non-Arab Israelis with the goal of resolving the entire Israel/Palestine issue, peacefully, soon, once and for all.  And I’ve watched many YouTube videos of Israeli soldiers who wanted and desperately needed to come clean, just like many of our soldiers have done [also on YouTube] upon return from duty in the ME, many of whom have continued to speak out, formed anti-war organizations, etc.

I did not know nor had I heard of the breakingthesilence.org – just perused their very interesting, even if disturbing, site. Signed up for the email and going to read more.

Sadly, there are good people who sometimes have done really bad – no – who have done horrific, barbaric, unspeakable things – lots of it done in the name of country and/or religion.  Given that what they did cannot be now undone, it gives me hope for the future to know that people like soldiers choose not to remain silent.  Speaking out – especially about one’s significant failures, heinous acts, requires great courage and humility.

Thank you for the info, Jefferson23.

          9. You're quite welcome…they're humble about it and more than a few have paid a

a heavy price for speaking out. Without whistleblowers, we’re all left in the dark.

    10. Most Israelis Want Pardon for Soldier Who Executed Wounded Palestinian Suspect

    January 5 2017, 7:46 p.m.
Hours after an Israeli army medic was convicted on Wednesday of manslaughter, for executing a wounded Palestinian suspect last year in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called for the soldier to be pardoned.

Netanyahu’s move completed a full retreat from his initial position. He had first expressed revulsion at the behavior of the medic, Elor Azaria, after viewing video of the incident published by an Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem. That graphic clip, recorded by a witness, showed that Azaria had fired a point-blank shot into the head of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a suspect in a knife attack at an army checkpoint who had already been subdued and was lying prone at his feet.

The prime minister began to back-track, however, when it became clear that a majority of the Israeli public considered the killing to be justified and a vocal minority called Azaria a hero.

Sympathy for the killer has grown over the past nine months, even as his victim’s family has been forced to view the fatal shot again and again in news reports on the trial in a military court.

      11. Thanks Jefferson, It is entirely beyond my comprehension

how a supposedly civilized society can condone this of behavior.  The article from the intercept is pretty depressing but should serve as an indictment for the leaders of Israel. I’m sure the polls were slanted – extremely. Sounds like good ole USA government tactics.

Thank you for the intercept article link.

        12. Many Israeli's have been fed a diet of propaganda and there is an unhealthy

level of nationalism and racism..very sad situation. Our foreign policy has enabled the dysfunction as well, imo. When polled, even the alleged liberal side of Israeli’s have no interest in seeing the West Bank settlements all dissolve and go to the Palestinians…international law is completely ignored by most…they live in their own bubble. You are most welcome for the link.

      13. Wait a minute? This asshole was a MEDIC??

So it’s not enough that he executed a wounded man, but his job was actually to SAVE lives, not end them. Fuck no, he doesn’t deserve a pardon, he deserves a life sentence. And when that’s done, he will have to answer to me.

Fuck Trump, and fuck anybody who defends him. He has proven himself to be a threat to all life on Earth.

        14. In part we see these kinds of horrifc reactions to the Palestinians b/c they're

living in a bubble of horse shit lies. Gideon Levy is seen as the enemy by more than enough Israeli’s. It’s not as if you see their citizens demanding their government settle the conflict equitably and in line with international law…that does not exist in any large measure within the population of its citizens.

This is one example of the crap they believe to be true:
