    Today in History-July 13th

On this day in 1643, commander of the Roundheads, Sir William “Fats” Waller was defeated along with his troops by the Royalist forces at Roundaway Down. Sir William would apologize later to Crowell, writing to refute stories that the loss was caused by general mayhem amongst his forces (as opposed to General Mayhem, who escaped and fled to back to London and spent the rest of his life disguised as Rita, the barmaid at the Charles Inn) swearing to the Lord Protector that he and his men “ain’t misbehaving, saving my musket balls for you”. His troops would forevermore be derided as Fatheads, an epithet that survives today in pubs all over Wiltshire.
