waste & they have no desire (and basically no physical ability as well) to do so.

It just felt better in every way not to have much stuff and not to have much garbage.

Bulk foods though, those have been around since at least the 60s and maybe even before.  It didn’t use to be an upper income thing — indeed, the uppers were the first to get into the opposite tendency as I remember.  When/where I grew up, an older country way of living was still partly in force.  It had disappeared even there by the early 80s; the Reagan recession was a big dividing line.
