Then “the John Birch Society and fringe elements of the Republican Party nurtured just such anti-globalist sentiments” but those sentiments remained concentrated on the fringe right.

The lesson is that there is ‘progressive globalism’ – a version endorsed by FDR – and the ‘conservative/neoliberal globalism’ that took the place of FDR’s version.
Similarly there is the regressive version of nationalism/isolationism offered by Herbert Hoover and Donald Trump that resulted in historic levels of income inequality and economic instability.
When you think you have no choice but to start a war, think again. Wars promise to be quick, clean and decisive. Wars lie. They cause more problems than they solve, they just won't tell you that beforehand.
