I knew several people who rode in the Rolling Thunder procession. Some of them had never served in the military, and were just into the general good feeling they got from making lots of noise with other riders. I’m not sure the ride ever had any real purpose, and it certainly has none today, other than to allow a few thousand riders a day of cheap patriotism. They remind me of all those Harley riding guys I see with denim jackets proclaiming their intention to ride their hogs for Jesus. They often have a Bible verse citation embroidered on the jacket, but I never encountered anything in the Bible that says, “Ride thee around aimlessly to further the Kingdom of God.” Same with Rolling Thunder. I think it’s just a bunch of guys who like to get together and make noise.
