This must be torture … I see every word you wrote with a new clarity, and I am so saddened.

Hell, no... I'm not giving up...

Below is a small piece which addresses a mother, yet can be directed to any family member: father, siblings, aunt, uncle, a friend

Did you ever wonder how mothers of disabled children were chosen?

Somehow I visualize God hovering over the earth selecting his instruments of propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

“This one gets a daughter. The Patron saint will be Cecelia”

“This one gets twins. The Patron saint will be Matthew”

“This one gets a son. The Patron saint… give her Gerard.

He’s used to profanity” Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles.

“Give her a disabled child”.
The angel is curious. “Why this one God? She’s so happy”

“Exactly,” smiles God. “Could I give a disabled child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel!”

“But has she patience?” asks the angel.

“I don’t want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of sorrow and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she’ll handle it. I watched her today, she has that feeling of self and independence that is so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I’m going to give her has her own world. She has to make her live in her world and that’s not going to be easy.”

“But Lord, I don’t think she even believes in you”

God smiles, “No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect – she has just enough selfishness”

The angel gasps – “Selfishness? is that a virtue?”

God nods. “If she can’t separate herself from the child occasionally she won’t survive. Yes here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a ‘spoken word’. She will never consider any ‘step’ ordinary. When her child says “Momma” for the first time she will be present at a miracle and will know it. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see… ignorance, cruelty and prejudice…and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as if she is here by my side”

“And what about her Patron saint?” asks the angel, his pen poised in midair.

God smiles… “A mirror will suffice.”

I’m sorry to hear this. My condolences to your family for this loss.

There is nothing wrong (to my knowledge) to only relating to animals.

First thought – horrible way to find out.

But then, there is no good way to get that news.

I am so sorry – there aren’t even good words to express it. I hope you can keep good memories of her.

I’m sure no words can express it.  I’m so very, very sorry.

Please know that I and other friends here will be thinking of you.

Since becoming a father, this is one of those lurking fears you hope never manifest and tears the heart out when hearing about it happening to others.  I hope she’s at peace, wherever she is.  And I hope you find your peace (But don’t stop trying to take a piece out of those eejit politicians).

On a side note, I tried to describe to a friend years ago how being a parent is an exercise in controlled terror.  I still stand by that.

And there is little that we can do to lessen your pain. Your feeling about Democrats is so right on. The best that we can do is try to elect those who at least promise to fix this sorry medical system that we have. Most of them will not deliver, but a few of them might. May your daughter be at peace now.

Loss of a child is about the toughest thing. I hope you are OK.

It can be not just a sense of loss but a feeling of living with a curse, “this cursed earth” as has been said. There is no remedy, but maybe with time there can be an acceptance.

That is a nightmare.

I agree about healthcare, too.

My heart breaks for you. I lost my daughter as an infant, and that was difficult. But I think its 33x worse what you’re going through. Please be kind to yourself, and take care of yourself and your family. I hope eventually, and not before too long you all find some peace.

And I know from experience that it is easier to purchase a gun in this country, or lethal pills, than it is to find decent, affordable mental health care. Ludicrous.
