A Flawed UN Investigation on Syria

    * Embedded links within OP.

UN investigators increasingly make their conclusions fall in line with Western propaganda, especially on the war in Syria, as occurred in a distorted report about last year’s attack on an aid convoy

by Gareth Porter, March 13, 2017

The March 1 report by the United Nations’ “Independent International Commission of Inquiry“ asserted that the bloody attack on a humanitarian aid convoy west of Aleppo City on Sept. 19, 2016, was an airstrike by Syrian government planes. But an analysis of the U.N. panel’s report shows that it was based on an account of the attack from the pro-rebel Syrian “White Helmets” civil defense organization that was full of internal contradictions.

The UN account also was not supported by either the photographic evidence that the White Helmets provided or by satellite imagery that was available to the commission, according to independent experts. Further undermining the UN report’s credibility, the White Helmets now acknowledge that rockets they photographed were not fired from Russian or Syrian planes but from the ground.

Like last December’s summary of the UN’s Headquarters Board of Inquiry report on the same incident, the Commission’s report described the attack as having begun with “barrel bombs” dropped by Syrian helicopters, followed by further bombing by fixed-wing planes and, finally, strafing by machine guns from the air.

The March 1 report did not identify any specific source for its narrative, citing only “[c]ommunications from governments and non-government organizations.” But in fact the UN investigators accepted the version of events provided by the White Helmets chief in Aleppo province as well as specific evidence that the White Helmets had made public.

    1. The long arm of the propagandists.

      2. Yep and Porter is the last guy on the planet to prop up a

conspiracy theory…not going to happen. I hope more people will read his work on this topic. I appreciate his scrutiny.

    5. How many more "Flawed Investigations" can we have before

American’s Wake Up and there is a “Tipping Point?”

Or, are we so Besotted with “Trump News 24/7″ that most are just ignoring what is going on in the rest of the world and cannot find a way to relate to it, because we just Don’t Know About It?”

Our MS News Media is forbidden to allow  “Connecting the Dots” in World News.  Where are the Discussion Shows on TV that allow Many Sides to express their views on American Foreign and Domestic Policy.

We are Ignorant because of MSM Control?  In the Internet Age is that an Excuse?  Or are the American People struggling with trying to put Food on the Table, dealing with Health Issues beyond control without support, and being fed nothing but Distractions on TV or in their Cable/Local News that just allows them to Tune Out of the World Around Them–Just to Mentally Survive?

    6. Time for Henry Miller again:

For the man in the paddock, whose duty it is to sweep up manure, the supreme terror is the possibility of a world without horses.

If you really want independent investigations (which we don’t) then you need independent investigators.

You have to give some credit to that woman who resigned and stood by her work over the Apartheid label for Israel. Most of them chicken out.

And it’s a good time to bring up Benda’s Treason of the Intellectuals too. That sort of selling out is exactly what he was talking about.

      7. Thoughtful post…as usual.

It is not easy to stand up to the status quo…you can lose your job, Finkelstein is one. But there are others…Snowden I worry about too.

Look what happens when you cave in the end too….Goldstone. He would have been better off sticking to his guns, his name is shit anyway now. He has my sympathy to a degree…it was disgraceful what they did to him.

        8. It's terrifying, just like it says, for most people.

No exaggeration. It is not a good idea to threaten somebodies job.

And it comes up all the time with these Republicans, they like making threats, taking things away.

And that’s why you want independent funding for your real NGOs, journalists, and other watchdogs, funding nobody can threaten.

So I’m working up my taxes today, getting simpler again, thank goodness.

It ain't the things you don't know that hurts you, it's the things you know that ain't so.

          9. Yes, true all around…intimidation comes in many forms and the independent

funding would be a big help to curb it.

Good luck with the tax filings..they can be a pain.
