    A message from Mary

Once in awhile I feel like I need to remind people of what our purpose is. What our main goal here is.

We live in extraordinarily bizarre times. We are a nation run by and for the oligarchs. There is no question about that. It is obvious in nearly every piece of legislation, every discussion where we try to move forward, every single thing in our lives is effected by it. For some, more than others.

We have at least one member who has openly discussed what the horrendous “healthcare” laws, Medicaid specifically in this instance, is doing to her family.

@madfloridian‘s has a family member who is dying from ovarian cancer. She wants to come home. She wants to be with her family in Florida. But, because she would not be covered by Medicare in a different state, she can’t. It’s killing madflo and her family. A completely unnecessary bunch of bureaucratic bullshit is ripping the family apart, more so emotionally but literally in the fact she can’t make it so her step daughter can come home.

We can, and probably will, lose net neutrality. The FCC, calling the proposal, “Restoring Internet Freedom Proposal” is controlled by corporate shills. I hope beyond hope all our calls, comments, emails, protests, etc., will win in the end. But they’ve been trying to get this done forever. They will not give up.

    NAFTA is up for renegotiation.
    https://www.cwa-union.org/news/nafta-update

Our friend, ally and activist extraordinaire, Larry Cohen, is in Providence, RI right now fighting to end the terrible parts of this trade deal. The NGA summer meeting is happening this weekend. Protests abound.
    http://www.rifuture.org/tag/larry-cohen/

We have the most horrific bill in modern history coming up for a vote. A bill the Republicans have the audacity to call, “Better Care and Reconciliation Act” but should be called “The Kill Bill” They have also excluded themselves from the horrors of this bill.

We have the 2018 midterms coming up. Candidates all over the country are already into their campaigns. Primaries start next month.

My point is we have a ton of work to do. While many come here just for discussion, many also come for activism.

There is a lot going on that controls much of what happens. Money in politics is the biggest hurdle we have. If we don’t get rid of it, we will not succeed in any real change.

One way to do that is to help elect Berniecrats, real, left, liberal progressives who will only accept public funds.

Berniecrats and even those to left of him. The scales of justice have been imbalanced for far too long. Maybe we need to go overboard to the left to try and even it out. I don’t know. But it’s a worthy discussion

One way we will not do that is to stifle conversation. To attack a person rather than an idea. To use tactics we’ve seen before to try to shut people down and shut them up.

We’ve been a little lax of late on personal attacks. Partly due to the fact there has been some information in posts that are relevant to the discussion. Partly due to the fact that there have been fewer reports and when something is finally seen by us mods, it’s been up for a couple of days.

However, I would rather see the site die than allow these tactics to continue. The most important thing we discussed, Jim Peterson and I, was how we wanted to get away from people trying to control discussion. That and just outright attacks. That is something @mannygoldstein and all the mods and admins agree about. It’s our number one rule. As @areawoman put it in our first days here, the “don’t be a dick rule.” :)

    I’m imploring everyone to please:

    ·Report posts with personal attacks
·Do not reply to posts you disagree with by attacking the poster
·Do not reply in kind to an attack on you. Please just report it
·Keep the discussion civil. I know things can get heated. But we’re adults. Pretty smart and well informed adults.
·Realize that if something is in the news every day, it’s news. It’s allowed to be discussed and posted. If it’s not something you’re interested in, ignore it. Or post your own post that proves your point.
Yes, the Russia shit is more than annoying. It’s all day every day, everywhere. But, like it or not, there are dealings between the President of The United States and Russian oligarchs. That matters.

There is also obvious collusion with corporate democrats and Russia, as well as other countries. Why our government doesn’t seem to care about that, I’m sure we can guess.

Regardless, people should be able to discuss it without fear of being attacked for it. Just like people who don’t buy into any of it shouldn’t be called things like “Trump apologist.”

Make it a debate, not an argument. That’s what we’re about.

Let’s please get off that crazy train of trying to shut down discussion.

And, while the only sources we will shut down without question are hate sites, we ask that you please check sources before posting really out there conspiracy theories.

I know they exist, conspiracies. We’ve seen it time and again. But when you’re posting something that is really out there, especially with incorrect information, that’s going to either be moved to EC or trashed. When we post things like that, we lose credibility.

My hope and dream for JackpineRadicals is to actually cause change for the better. I pour my heart and soul into this site every single day. We’ve gone through quite a bit of shit from time to time. It’s been difficult to know where the line is. How hard to draw that line. And I know I’ve made some terrible mistakes. I hope I’m learning from them.

In that vain, I’m trying to head something off at the pass with this post. Just asking that we all try to discuss with civility and purpose. To be, as my father used to say, just be good and kind to each other.

We do awesome things here. We have the best members of any board out there. It’s an honor and a privilege to host this site. We know that. I know that.

    Thank you

          34. YOUR ARTICLE OUTSTANDING but I think I have found the bug

on account of trying to read your posts is giving me a near seizure   oh look a whole family of bugs

The “Loading Bug” is one of the worst bad bugs
there is. If you happen to see one, think:
          M.L.A.!! MEDUSA! LOOK AWAY!
This nasty critter confuses its predators (and victims) with a clever technique:
making its 27 legs vanish, appear, vanish, appear again,
creating an effect which both hypnotizes & paralyzes.
Cases of fatal seizures in large mammals:
The “Deadly Dance of the Loading Bug” is well
documented in bad bug folklore, known to trigger
brain seizures, spontaneous head explosion, and/or
a kind of death. But don’t be afraid: a short exposure
is harmless unless you stumble into a nest of them.

              85. I apologize for using seizures that way, I do not have them.

But if I were prone, the bug would probably set me off. Maybe somebody more knowledgeable can weigh in, To my brain it’s akin to a strobe light effect, or those blue car headlights. Brain wants me to scream and make it go away, but it’s not necessary. But thank you for the generous offer.

                It’s for net neutrality.

If anyone has a problem with it, I’ll remove it.

I will remove it fairly soon regardless

      25. Some of us are here because the owners of other sites couldn't deal with dissent

You, on the other hand, as admin, have never restricted debate beyond the admonition to “keep it civil”.

Personally, I believe that “centrist” democrats are an equal threat to democracy as authoritarian republicans.  Others may disagree, but I’ve never felt persecuted or isolated because of my opinions.  Similarly I’ve never personally attacked any JPR’er who did not hold that view.

Keep up the good work, Mary, and please please please don’t let this site become “Sk***erized”.

I know you’ve never attacked anyone. And I’m glad you’ve never been, or at least, felt attacked.

I agree with you about the centrist dems. But I understand other points of view.

As far as “Sk***erized” never gonna happen. There’s not enough money in the world for me to do that. :)

      32. I have noticed how extraordinarily civil and non-personal Bernie Sanders is.

He is a great model.  I’ve watched him time and again, in interviews, ignore questions that are baited to get him to personally attack someone and immediately – almost magically – turn the discussion back to THE ISSUES.  He is a master at it.

I’m inclined that way, Bernie’s way – although I sometimes get pissed at a few posters, or start suspecting disguised “trolls.”  I think of Bernie when that happens – a man who has been the target of intense provocations, and refuses to get personal and sticks to the issues – and try to remember my own advice, too.  When I post at JPR, I realize that I am NOT just posting and replying to those here – I am trying to help educate possibly thousands of casual readers or lurkers.  If we just remember that – it’s not just about us, or the person we are replying to, it’s about our entire national political life and about getting people to think for themselves – we will help improve American society and not make it worse.  This really requires tolerance and patience.

And thank you, Mary, for this post and for all your work!

        45. He seems to be a man who has conquered his own ego.

He understands that the world is much larger than his perceptions of it, and that his viewpoint is one of many.

Its a simple truth that very few of us are strong enough to even recognize, let alone act upon.

      43. As long as this site does not form a Heather squad I will post here.

This site needs to stay different than other sites by maintaining a polite but serious attitude when arguing with others. We can disagree and lose debates, it is natural. Come back the next day from a different angle and try again imo.

With the average forum a toxic hot mess, JPR needs to strive to be above the fray and adult enough to discuss issues without resorting to name calling etc..

      Just my 1 cent.

          56. It's an old movie…

It’s an old movie, and a pretty good reference, considering the kind of activities most of us had to deal with at other sites before coming here.

          https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/heathers/

A deliciously nasty black comedy, Heathers is set at a cliquish high school in Ohio. The most exclusive of those cliques is the Heathers, comprised of the prettiest and most popular girls in town. The group’s leader is the manipulative Kim Walker, who orchestrates the humiliation of anyone who fails to meet her standards.

Thanks for the OP, and especially thanks for keeping people’s eyes on the ball, which is that we need to not only discuss things here, we need to work to bring about positive change. Pivot from slacktivism to activism. Excellent.

Thanks for all you and the OP! Well said.

I would add that we should keep the personal drama out of the forums and also people should refrain from making comments that “some people on here will fall for it” or things of that nature. That just leads to divisiveness of the kind we have all seen before and begs for swarming, which, thankfully, I have very rarely seen on here.

          74. I had a lot of good friends including you invite me over to this site.

When some well known forums started taking a nose dive, I was told about JPR and initially passed…I was still a hard drinker of the kool aid – desperation makes one do horrible things like vote for the lesser of two evils. In this case a choice between a fool and a warmonger.

Anyway, I am so glad to be here and participating in a community of folks that don’t want to troll and do want to have a conversation about life. Those other sites are so toxic and they are like a drug for their diehard minions. It took all of five minutes to realize JPR is nothing like the echo chambers babble on about.

As someone else said and I think every partisan forum has them – Heathers – they will eventually break the board and cause people that live in reality to flee.

              77. That was more important to me than any particular forum – where my friends were

posting at. After the purge, you all came here or most did. Some still post at those other sites and that is fine they are all great folks that are actually keeping those boards alive.

I am glad you and Manny formed this site, Deadpool is hilarious and the moderators are all old timers that know the ropes. I really gave up on that one place after they banned Loonix and a few others that have never caused any trouble. You all just wanted the progressive to win – but the HRC-PAC-DNC monster cheated and gave us their choice of opponent – IOW they gave us Trump.

And for that I will never forgive the party or these current leaders.

      62. I'll try to be nicer to the richsplainers

I’ll admit I can get grumpy with them when they dismiss poverty issues and/or characterizing with thinly veiled implications that people without means are somehow more to blame than the government that puts them there. Mea Culpa where applicable.

Other than that (which has more to do with pain induced grumpiness) I tend to stay out of the recent pissing matches which is why I read far more than post these days.

“We must dissent from the indifference. We must dissent from the apathy. We must dissent from the fear, the hatred and the mistrust. We must dissent from a nation that has buried its head in the sand, waiting in vain for the needs of its poor, its elderly, and its sick to disappear and just blow away. We must dissent from a government that has left its young without jobs, education or hope. We must dissent from the poverty of vision and the absence of moral leadership. We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better.” Thurgood Marshall

Thank you for your unending patience with us all.

        73. Thank you for your patience with us

We never did this before. And we’re still learning.

        Thank you for the compliment!

      76. This is oh so simple for me.

If you don’t get Mary, you don’t get what JPR is all about.

Please take her words to heart. Live them. SHE is why I am here. I am not alone in that. We take anyone fucking with her very seriously and personally.  Don’t do it.

        78. You're awesome

        Thank you.

But honestly, I want people here to cause change. :)

You’re just awesome. I don’t think people have any idea how hard you and all the mods work.

      81. Thanks so much for holding our feet to the fire Mary. Well done.

Sorry I’m late to the party.  Been off-line a lot, and just recently saw this ..

I love this place, and so appreciate all you and the other admins & mods do, to keep the site ship-shape and the discussions civil.

      92. Myself I have not seen any of that personal attack.

But I probably don’t read as much of it as you do.

And my responses are sometimes contrary to many people’s way of thinking but still no one has attacked me personally…unless they did it behind my back. So I am quite happy with the quality of this place…a far cry from that place we all know.

I’ve never seen you come to close to attacking anyone.

        Thank you!

      100. Hi Mary!

thanks for the post. Will keep all of that in mind. While I think that it is definitely concerning for a Presidential candidate to be colluding with Russia, I can also see the side that says we can’t exclude all the other important issues. If Russia is our only big issue in 2020, the Democrats may lose again. Thanks for all you do for this website.

Every time I see you name, I think of the bible.

Yes, they’ll do it yet again. Another reason we need a new party

Still, I see Matthew and numbers, I think bible. Damn Catholic upbringing. :)

              104. Yep I was raised a Catholic but not practicing except for certain events

I went to Catholic high school so had Mass there. Now I am spiritual but not very religious.

                105. I went to a Catholic grade school

From 2nd through 6th grade. Then to an all girl Catholic high school for one year.

I understand where you are. That’s how I was for years. But I’m no longer even spiritual.

After everything, well lots of things, came out aboutthe priests and molestation, I decided that religion is just horrible.

The rest, well, it is what it is for me. :)

Thank you for the information. I love getting to know people
