    After Irma check in thread

So many here were/are in Irma’s path. Some were spared the worst of it. Some where hit much harder than anticipated.

We are grateful to @momcat for her updates and her check-in thread. Her thread is now extremely long so were starting this one.

Please let us know if you’re ok, how your property survived and if you are in need of any help.

This is the link to file for assistance from FEMA for both Irma and Harvey.

    https://www.disasterassistance.gov

This link has links for other types of help and how to volunteer

    https://www.fema.gov/hurricane-irma

If you still haven’t applied for help from Harvey damage, the FEMA link is above

So insignificant but it bothers me that the loveable, invisible, man sized, rabbit now has the same name of that horrible hurricane. (Just a little levity.)

I hope everyone is safe and sound.

Edit. I’m reading the replies but I’m unable to respond to everyone now. About to leave for Texas

Edit 9/13/17: I’m leaving this up another day because we still haven’t heard from some JackpineRadicals

      1. Checking in!!!!! I live a bit SE of Tampa, beneath Brandon, and this morning

all I can see wrong is lots of little branches and three fence sections down in the back yard.  We had already bought three new ones, and some posts, so no need to see if Lowe’s or Home Depot is open, at least as yet.  By the way – Home Depot closed early on Saturday and was closed on Sunday – and they paid everybody who was scheduled to work as if they had worked.  Class act.  Maybe all stores did that!  Hopefully!   Never lost power.  But cannot reach my sister in Bradenton, which did lose power.  I think Irma was still a 2 or 3 when it hit there, perhaps.

When I woke up this morning, power on, etc., I kinda thought maybe I dreamed the whole thing, but then I turned the TV on.    Hope we hear from everyone affected today.  Thanks, all, I never felt isolated.  Mary and her updates, people checking in – means a lot.

You think the only reason that people won't vote for a warmongering Third Way fracking-enabling cluster bomb throwing H-1B increasing lying pandering corporate and Wall Street shill who says she has no problem putting abortion rights on the table is because we are mad about Bernie?  Um, nope.

        27. Good to hear you're OK. I have been working for a client in Brandon the last

couple months. Really like the Tampa area.

We were in east Fort Myers during the hurricane in a house of a friend’s.

Just got back from surveying the damage to our homes down in naples and were very fortunate to have minimal damage. Power is still off though so we will spend one  more night in Ft Myers.

In Naples my neighbor around 300 feet away got part of roof blown off and the neighbor next to them had their entire lanai (porch) ripped off. In their front yard appeared to be the entire roof of another unit but not sure where it came from.

Will try and post some pictures later.

Glad you are safe and things weren’t too bad up there!

          28. That's really lucky for you! What I thought were a few little branches were

BIG branches, in the front yard, and it is amazing that none of them hit the house or a vehicle.  Spent the morning cutting up branches and piling them up along the curb for whenever the yard waste guys get to our area. Turns out that lifting three sections of fence back up is way harder than it sounds; we will have to cut them up, and then install new sections.

Being in Fort Myers or Naples sounds like it was frightening.  Glad you are safe.

      3. Not really 'after' here in Savannah

More like ‘in the thick of it’. Lots of wind and rain. Power out, probably for at least a day. But so far nothing has fallen on the house. Another 6 or so hours before it is scheduled to finally pass. Gigantic wind field.

          15. The worst seems over now

Sun came out. Still some wind but not the high gusts. Storm surge is significant, about like we got last year. The pond behind my house is as full as I have ever seen it, though.

                  38. Wasn't nearly as bad as Matthew

We got about the same storm surge, but the winds weren’t high enough to topple many trees. Last year when I came back home, it looked like a war zone outside of our neighborhood- trees down , snapped power poles, smashed houses. This year mostly just small branches  all over. We were lucky. If Irma had gone the way they were predicting last week, we would have been destroyed, like the Caribbean islands she hit.

I think Tampa is mostly OK. Lots of people without power.  My brother was in an evacuation zone in Venice (south of Sarasota) so he went to my sister’s house near Clermont (north of Lakeland). Storm went right over them!  They’re all fine, but no power.

          34. We got really lucky.

The track saved our bacon.  It actually limited a lot of damage by landing in Naples and staying over land.  The track that kept the eye over water would have been so much worse.  The surge would have been so much worse.

We were in the eye for about 30 minutes.  At that point we had lost power, the radio was useless as they kept talking like we could see them. Even on NPR they were all pointing at maps we couldn’t see.  It was maddening losing the track, but in the end there was nothing that knowing would have changed.

Power flipped back on 30 minutes ago.  Hell, even the cable works.

I learned a lot this week.  Go through the eye of a hurricane is now checked off the bucket list.

      40. We're fine in St. Augustine, FL.

Several huge tree branches fell betwee our cars, but missed both of them.  Seven fence panels down.  I nailed two of the smaller ones up today, bur having caught a nasty cold that showed up just as I made my final walk around the house to make sure everything was as secure as I could make, the rest will have to wait until I’m feeling better and have help.

Others in the area, Vilano Beach, Davis Shores, Crescent Beach, etc., were wallopped.  St. Augustine proper flooded again nearly or maybe as bad as Hurricane Matthew last October.  Some people who had just moved back into their homes, and some who had not yet moved back into their homes after repairing the damage from Matthew are facing the same situation as last year.

This 452 year old town, which DIDN’T celebrate its founding on September 8 this year due to Irma, and some of us are wondering if this is a warning that it is time to leave Paradise and move to higher, inland, ground.

Irma’s eye wasn’t even close to us, yet she toppled houses, decimated condos, and flooded as badly as any storms before her.  A lot of that water pulled from Long Island, Bahamas and Pensacola Bay seems to have made its way here.

Electricity is out and FPL estimates that power will return to my area by 11:45 PM, September 17.

Lots of wind, but not as much rain as they predicted (got maybe 2″ or 3″, they were claiming we’d get 10″). What was left of the eye passed maybe 6-8 miles from where I live to the East. Close call.

Been out helping others, many without electricity and water, mostly elderly. Lots of work to do, lots of opportunities to talk to people of all ages and backgrounds. I’ll fill in more in my thread in the “Activist” forum when time permits.

        47. I'm glad you're safe

And it’s great you’re helping. It’s unbelievable there’s still no power for so many.

I’ll look for your thread. Thank you

There are still a few people we haven’t heard from. Hoping it’s just that they’re without power and/or are busy with the damage

      49. I just got this update from ChicaB1 in the old thread.

i hope she doesn’t mind me sharing it:

      15. We DID Have To Evacuate, But Home Now & Have Power Too!

This hurricane was the very first one since I’ve lived in Florida that really worried me so much! AND the first one that we ever evacuated to another place. All is well as can be now, some places were hit harder than where I live even though I lived about 1 1/2 mile from Gulf. This one came from the East which is unusual at best and it was all over the place. It made me think of it like a car that lost it’s steering wheel! Was going to hit Miami and go up coast, then kept moving further inward and THEN it was on the east coast and coming right up at us. It veered off a little as it got closer to the Sarasota area! There were many comments about the “the legend of Venice lives one!” Some believe the legend, many researchers say nothing to it, but all I know is that we’ve NEVER had a direct hit since I’ve lived here for 30 years. But… NEVER SAY NEVER!

Still, it’s been a real mess and it STINKS from standing water filled with sickening sweet pine cones and other debris. And the heat has been much worse than I’ve ever seen. I think the whole of Florida has some damage, but my heart goes our to those in the Virgin Islands and the area around them! My heart just breaks for them. OK, jut now getting back to posting and need to get up and walk around. Sitting for longer times still cause me problems, but being active helps a lot.

Will return later… Need to catch up on posts here now! So much has gone on and so much that makes my stomach churn! Can’t bear to watch OR hear T-RUMP of HERSELF speak and whine about so much S–T! Just totally disgusting!
