This guy must have been extremely clumsy in covering his tracks. This was so common as to be laughable when I was in the navy. I worked in the communications center, and there were frequent Top Secret messages back and forth between various commanding officers, discussing who would pay for the hookers, who would rent the beach house, who would buy the food and booze, etc. They were usually careful enough not to let their prostitutes anywhere near the ship, but we would sometimes get a glimpse of one of our officers walking around town with a hooker. They were not too concerned about being found out, so we deduced they had a pretty tight system of covering for each other. I don’t imagine things have changed too much since then (1970s).

Exiled him to Maine, huh?  At least they didn’t send him to Nome or Adak. When I was a sailor a really crappy captain pissed off the master chiefs and was transferred to a naval air station in Greenland. They must not have been too upset with this guy.

What’s interesting to me is that one of his sailors ratted on him. I’ll bet you a paycheck(no, I’m not a federal employee) that there were some other issues on that sub and they just zapped him with this one. The Navy never used to give a hoot about consorting with hookers, so long as it wasn’t too public or in the “wrong” places.

Yeah, I’m thinking he shafted the crew somehow, and that’s why they complained. Of course it’s possible some bible thumper got all righteous about prostitutes. Much weirdness on a ship.

Long story didn’t take. But for a captain of a nuclear submarine to be relieved—usually that takes upsetting lifer chiefs and an officer or two. Those master chiefs are friends with admirals. Better to stay on their good side.
