• Update on weirdness

Update on site issues: (1. replies now need a title *and* something in the message box, 2. certain links are causing strange pop-ups on Apple devices, and 3. Some folks can't type anything into the text box.) Basically, a series of unfortunate events set us back on testing. We'll get to it as soon as we can, and hopefully things can get fixed by this weekend if not before.  More info: https://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/site-problems-more-info/

Al From Says Double Down on Third Way

Don’t be fooled. Populism won’t help Democrats win again
    Al From
    The Guardian

Conventional wisdom among many pundits and Democratic strategists is that to win over more of them, we need to offer a populist agenda – associated with senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren – that rails against the wealthy. This thinking would also relegate the growth-oriented New Democrat-Third Way agenda associated with President Bill Clinton and Tony Blair, which I played an active part in promoting, to the scrapheap of history.

I disagree. In fact, I believe the opposite is true.

Our first priority must be the revival of the American dream by fostering broad-based economic growth. At its best, the Democratic party is the party of upward mobility, and growing the economy is the prerequisite for expanding opportunity.

Simply put, redistribution doesn’t work if there is nothing to redistribute. This economic growth can only be generated by a robust private sector, generating high-skill, high-wage jobs and programs that equip every American with the opportunities and skills that he or she needs to get ahead.

    1. Please read the Comments section, as opposed to the article.

From gets his ass handed to him ( rightly so! )

      6. Those are some great comments.

There are no viable arguments against the comments because there are none. It’s amazing that Al From has the nerve to even write this garbage. He should be in hiding.

      16. Yes, the comments are great! The populace is more informed than

Money, Power and Media entities want.

If I were Al From I would be thinking why did I publish such a stupid piece, but he is not me…

    2. Al From destroyed the Democratic Party.

      8. Looks like plenty to redistribute there

    4. Is Al From a kissing cousin of Ronald Reagan? They do think alike.

    5. I've come to the conclusion that third way democrats gave us

Trump. If not for the 3rd way stupidity, Trump wouldn’t have had a chance.  Thanks Al for Tump.

      9. Hear, Hear!

Those who voted for Clinton over Sanders – voted for Trump.

    7. It's hard to be polite when Al From is mentioned

But I’ll try and not say what I really think of him.

But plainly he is still shilling for the .01%. This fool won’t admit that there has been economic growth, it’s just that the benefits have all accrued to the top. It’s him saying  “TINA” (There Is No Alternative) to the Third Way and Globalization. Why he isn’t a rethug is beyond me.

There’s plenty to redistribute, and it does work if done in thoughtful and productive ways.  But if we keep going down this road, redistribution is coming whether he likes it or not, and it’s likely to be ugly.

I have a very nice chart that shows this clearly, but unfortunately can’t get it to post.

    10. Hell, more like quadrupling down

The population has come down the ladder of abstraction ( finally ) and those mooks continued to scamper up it.

Now they are having to fame this in such an abstract macroeconomic sense that only the pointiest of pointy heads think it makes sense.

    12. He talks like a normal human being until the 3rd paragraph

After that it is all bullshit, pie in the sky garbage we’ve all heard before. Al can go fuck himself with all his money, he is just a puppet for paymasters that give ZERO shits about the working class.

Of course the elitest millionaire confuses anger with desperation. I guess they will understand when ENOUGH people reach that desperation point. Forgotten middle class…what a fucking joke. Hey Al STFU and sitdown, you are a clueless fuckwad and obsolete.

We can thank the rich for one thing - times are changing due to the silent depression in the working class. I don't think the rich will be happy with the changes, but they forced it upon themselves through greed and avarice.

    15. that's OK, America is fully ready to kill off another party once again.

sounds like the Democrats decided to cut in line before the Republicans. and the nation will happily oblige their assisted suicide.

you are expendable, Democrats. try us again. please, i dare you. no one owes allegiance to a party or politicianno one.

    17. That particular line of BS sounded great in 1997.

Now we’ve seen the disastrous results in political and economic terms. Maybe Al should visit an unemployed factory worker in some gutted community in Ohio or Michigan. I’m sure they’d understand if he explained it to them in person.

    I would prefer not to.

    18. We Are Nearing Full Employment.

The Gig Economy is at capacity.

Yet people are not making enough to pay federal taxes.

The ultra rich are using every trick in the book to avoid paying more taxes and are expecting a tax cut under Trump.

    So Al Frum?

Where is the extra income for upward mobility you are talking about?
