Americans are having fewer and fewer babies, a new government report finds. In fact, we now aren’t making enough babies to replace ourselves.

For the population to reproduce itself at current numbers, the “total fertility rate” needs to be 2,100 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age over their lifetime, researchers for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in their report, released early Thursday. But the latest data show a current rate of just 1,765.5 per 1,000, or 16 percent below the number needed to keep the population stable without additions through immigration.

The total fertility rate has been declining steadily for seven years, but the numbers for 2017 represent the biggest drop in recent history. The rate for 2016 was 1,820.5; for 2015, 1,843.5; and for 2014, 1,862.5.

The CDC offered no explanation for why the American fertility rate is dropping so precipitously.

Gee, maybe because it’s expensive to give birth in this country, and it is widely perceived that the quality of life is declining?

(Third attempt at posting this reply. Hopefully the hamsters are fat and happy and asleep)

The article did mention a number of social and economic reason why the fertility rate is falling.

One of the reasons stated was because of s e x education. Um, OK maybe.

Being news on the cheap and only using one report from the CDC for this report, these matters are not mentioned.

      The  a b o r t i o n  rate is also falling.

Good news. Considering our track record, the last thing this planet needs is more of us.

Seems like a logical response to economic and environmental conditions if you ask me.

Personally, I wouldn’t bring a child into this currently violent, hateful, extremely dangerous world. Besides that, who can afford to raise children today?

I also recall reading that male fertility has dropped 52.4%  most likely because of GMOs and pesticides. Perhaps they’d like to study that and stop destroying the biological makeup of every living thing on the planet?

That being said, CHOOSING to not have children because of economics  or over population is one thing, but having your government cause infertility for the almighty dollar is quite another – and sinister. That is taking away choice – deliberately.

Untill we get Climate Destruction under control.

Why give birth to someone to only have them starve to death before they reach thirty?

It’s not just putting off having kids. People are starting to put off marriage too. Something like 1 out of 4 millennials still live with parents. But money isn’t the biggest issue. Poor people in other countries have lots of kids.

The more developed a country becomes, the lower its birthrate. Birthrates are falling all throughout the western world. It’s just a fact that women have less children when societies modernize or advance. Families dont need to be as big. They wont need a bunch of hands on a farm. Women also put off having children until they go to college or start a career. The waiting means overall less children.

The situation presents problems though. Many social programs rely on a young generation to support the aging generation. Social security and medicare, for example, will soon start to run out of money because it’ll be taking in less money than it is giving out. If a young generation has less kids and doesn’t make/spend as much money, that will lower revenue into the social systems available to a larger, older population. Social security was implemented right at the start of the Baby Boom. So it worked well then. Not sure it’s current design is going to work well now.

Many countries now view immigration as a fix to the problem. If they can fill the fertility gap with immigrants, that would pump more taxes into the system. But that’s just really kicking the can down the road. As the immigrants assimilate, they will have less children too. There are studies that show immigrants have a lower birthrate than the people of their home country. This is an expensive short-term fix.

This is an obsolete concern. automation and improvements in health care will solve most of the “problem” and the evolution away from capitalism will solve the rest. Quit thinking in terms of maintaining the status quo, it will change dramatically, and soon.
