Democracy is not an abstraction. Democracy is a lived experience predicated on one indispensable prerequisite: institutions of civic education that cultivate critical judgement for responsible citizenship.

Free public education, investigative journalism, liberal arts colleges, and civil discourse in freely available public spheres are chief among these institutions.

I used to think the worst thing about the US is that there was always hope for it to become a democracy. After 45 years of lived experience in the US, I have come to the conclusion that there is no such hope for this country.

      Flirting with fascism

I left my homeland when it was ruled by a tyrant Pahlavi monarch, and have ended up in the heart of a dysfunctional US empire flirting with fascism, while my homeland is now ruled by a tyrant clique of clerics who toppled that monarchy. I am no longer sure which of these three undemocratic options is worse.

No nation is immune to conspiracy theories. They are convenient, override crowded and difficult facts, and appeal to communities and nations unable, incapable, unwilling or ill-equipped to face overwhelming evidence of a cruel and chaotic world.

But the proportions of conspiracy theories in this country is something else. The assassination of John F Kennedy, the 1969 moon landing, the 9/11 attacks, Jews plotting to rule the world, Muslims plotting to rule the world, communists plotting to rule the world, paedophiles plotting to rule the world – you name it. Every piece of outlandish gibberish forgotten in every apothecary’s medicine box, almost one in two Americans believe it.

Those who are still asleep are basing their democracy on the fact that we still vote in primaries and the general elections. They are missing the fact that it was the DNC that chose the D candidate and the same thing happens in the R party. So we may vote but our votes do not count unless they agree with the party leaders. That by any other definition is an oligarchy and it ignores most of the votes.

      Hi jlp, ob and jwirr

One could argue from a perverse perspective that the real conspiracy theory is that America is considered a Democracy at all. The only thing that sustains such a belief is the belief itself and not tangible or demonstrative evidence. So, by believing in an effective myth, Americans conspire to delude themselves about their own country instead of accepting a harsher, though real, truth. In a very real sense the myth becomes conspiracy theory or ultimate delusion.

      Hi hg,

Yes – agreed completely. America is but a land of myth and make believe. Nothing more than mirage on a summer day. Just so much hot air when all is said and done.

…the thing about the conspiracy theories, is they are a reaction to being lied to about everything. Gaslighting is the norm for our government. We are told we live in a democracy, yet research shows again and again that the wishes of the majority are never implemented. We are told that we are a uniquely moral country, yet we engage in illegal wars. We are told that our society is based on equality of opportunity, yet the divide between haves and have-nots continues to widen. It goes on and on. In such circumstances, people do sense they are being lied to, but are unable to discern the source of their discomfort. Enter the demagogue, who tells them even more lies, putting a name to their unease and pointing the finger at some chosen person or group and saying “It’s them! They are the ones who are lying to you, who are stealing from you, who are causing the distress in your lives!”. It is insidious.

IMO, the CIA and their ilk (e.g. MI5, Mossad, and other secret agencies inside and outside the US) are largely responsible for this state of affairs. People do correctly sense they are not being told the truth, but unfortunately, we all are susceptible to believing convenient untruths. The secret agencies operate with impunity and now deceive at will, in whatever direction they want to, meaning they lie to the public, they lie to one another, and they lie to the politicians who supposedly exercise oversight on them. Since it all has the imprimatur of “national security”, anyone who questions them is suspect.

So here we are, at the present moment. It has been amusing to say the least to see the DNI officially bat down any notion that the Hunter Biden story is “Russian disinformation”. For one thing, no one has denied the truth of the story, however sketchy its release at this time is. So even if the Russians had anything to do with the story coming out, in what sense would it be disinformation? But such is the devolution of our discourse that these niggling little details do not even register on the national consciousness. Truth would go a long way in helping us, but truth is anathema to TPTB.

One final note: the JFK assassination and the 9/11 attacks inspire conspiracy theories because the official stories that were presented to us are in fact ludicrous. Whatever the real truth is, it is clear that inconvenient facts were discarded when concocting the version of events that were made public by the government. If you recall, GWB did not even want to have an official investigation of 9/11. When forced to do so, the funding was IIRC something like 10% of what had been made for the Challenger disaster under Reagan. Maybe it was increased later, but the point is, our government actively hides the truth from us and gaslights us, and our politicians are so enamored of their privileged positions and clearances and knowing information that is unavailable to us proles, that none of them have any incentive to be truthful, and precious few of them ever even try.

The US is a failed experiment. It is a political culture that is not compatible with democracy, for Americans, both conservative and liberal, are trapped in a vicious cycle exacerbating the worst in their respective characters.

      There you have it.

The CT is that America is a Democracy. That it is capable of meaningful checks and balances between the different branches of govt and within different agencies. That it is capable of doing meaningful investigations into itself and events that happen to/within it.

JFK and 911 are such clear examples of our govt behaving more like a cover up machine than a truly curious and fact seeking organization. When Obama stated “yeah, we tortured some folks” but chose to move forward rather than prosecute anyone (as required by Intl Law)  it became clear that the two party system is more interested in protecting each other than any sort of justice or democratic processes to remedy injustices. Obama could have snuffed out most of his political opposition with a thorough investigation into torture and war crimes. That is……..if they really are his political opposition.

Once realizing that we are not a democracy it is amazing to see all of the different people/agencies/orgs that perpetuate this silly CT. The get out the vote crowd being the head cheerleaders. (Yes, now I am blushing and feeling foolish- I used to encourage people to vote!) The only voting does is perpetuate the myth that we are a democracy. It gives TPTB legitimacy when they deserve none. It suggests that we consent to being governed as we are.

      I do not.

is not compatible with Capitalism and never will be.

No country in this world will ever achieve Democracy without defeating or highly regulating its Capitalism.

Also remember that there were never any public Congressional hearings about 9/11. You can bet your sweet bippy that if Al Gore had been President during 9/11, there would have have been 20 Congressional committees raking him over the coals if he had exhibited the same type of behavior that GWB had exhibited in that 2nd grade Florida classroom.

And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)
