It’s insane that both U.S. mainstream political parties are attacking one another as being far-left extremists because by global standards they are both very much right-wing parties, says Caitlin Johnstone.

The Biden campaign has a new Spanish-language ad out claiming that President Trump is cut from the same cloth as leftist leaders Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and Nicolas Maduro. This is not the first time the Biden campaign has done this, with the same comparison made to Spanish-speaking voters in Florida ads last month.

The hashtag #ComradeTrump is trending on Twitter as of this writing because a well-funded Super PAC run by never-Trump Republicans put out an appallingly stupid viral video featuring footage of Trump splashed with red hammer-and-sickle symbols interspersed with images of Soviet leaders while an English-captioned narrator gushes about Mother Russia’s support for “Comrade Trump” in Russian. As of this writing the video has over two million views on Twitter alone.

This tactic of negatively associating Trump with communism and socialism, combined with the consistent pattern of attacking the president for being insufficiently warlike, would only work if it was directed at the members of a reactionary, jingoistic right-wing political ideology. And it does work, because that’s exactly the ideology of the Democratic Party.

Trump, meanwhile, appears to have positioned his entire 2020 campaign around portraying his right-wing opponent as far left, spending the last month tweeting absurd statements like:

      • Not only will Sleepy Joe Biden DEFUND THE POLICE, but he will DEFUND OUR MILITARY! He has no choice, the Dems are controlled by the Radical Left.”
      • Sleepy Joe Biden will be (already is) pulled all the way Left.”
      • “Sleepy Joe Biden refuses to leave his basement “sanctuary’ and tell his Radical Left BOSSES that they are heading in the wrong direction.”

Almost anything can be said in any political ad, with no consequence to the guilty lying party.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.

The problem with political ads is that they used to be offset by legitimate, objective coverage by the news media of where the candidates stood on specific issues. Unfortunately, once networks and stations realized that this sort of thoughtful coverage  in the public interest cost money, whereas ads made them boat loads of money, they stopped investing in actual journalism and focused on covering charges and counter-charges as well as the horse race.

This resulted in a criminally under informed public and our current situation makes it clear what that has led to.

@rufustfirefly Even the corporate media’s “fact checks” don’t report actual facts. They apply their Overton Window where things like a national health care system or ending wars is unthinkable.

The thing I personally find most irritating is the classification system they use in their polls. They’ll ask people some version of “Do you describe yourself as liberal, conservative, or moderate?” I’m none of them because I’m a socialist. If I’m given only those choices, I’ll say I’m a conservative just to mess with them.

Opposing Trump for his record over the past 3 1/2 years does not make one a ‘never-Trump’ republican, though that is probably what he will call them in his tweets.

More accurately they should be called “never-AGAIN-Trump” republicans. More power to the few of them that there are. There are not very many if you use the polls which should his approval rate among republicans runs in the 90%-95% range.

They are called 'human' rights not "if politicians do not feel threatened" rights. Many politicians see national sovereignty/security as more important because they protect their power and wealth. Human rights often do just the opposite.

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not resolved with more national sovereignty.

As far as political ads go not being truthful. when will they say we want the rich to get richer and for you, if you are lucky, the status quo with reduced purchasing “power
