This is in Canada. The dad got arrested for publicly using female pronouns to refer to his daughter who wants to be known as his son. Evidently, the court ordered the dad to respect the child’s wishes and refrain from publicly identifying the child as daughter, him, his, etc. The dad appears to be a jerk who is interested in shaming the child to get back at the ex-wife, so he makes a big point of using female pronouns and predicting that the soon-to-be boy will regret the decision and wish he was a girl again, This is not happening in the United States, or we would already see a big wave of Fox News support for the poor dad who only wants to publicly bully his child.

I think the confusion sets in when some still have a penis.

well, since transpeople are a fraction of 1%, ‘radical feminists’ likely the same, then ‘trans-exclusionary radical feminists’ must be –like maybe three people.
How much more can the ptb divide us?

I don’t think it’s the “ptb” dividing us. I saw that term “Terf” in something I read about the author of Harry Potter. She got called that on Twitter. I don’t think name calling helps either side of the debate.

TERFs are considered a “hate group” on most social media platforms. Last year, Reddit banned a whole bunch of subreddits that were advocating TERF ideology.
Rowling got in trouble because she was repeating a lot of TERF stuff on Twitter.

I have friends who have a cousin who recently came out as transgender and is transitioning from male to female. The father freaked out and moved out the family home. He and his wife are currently in therapy, but it doesn’t look good. He’s a macho guy who can’t accept it. Tearing the family apart. Too many kids are still unable to tell parents they’re gay for fear of what will happen to them. This is a whole different level.

The issue is far more complex than most of the stories make it appear – and he had already been ordered to stop publicly discussing the issue. He chose to defy the court order. He was arrested for contempt.
I’m not going to get into the rest, except to point out that some in this thread (not you @snot) seem to think that the treatment includes hormones (testosterone). It doesn’t. The treatment, currently, is puberty blockers. Canada does not allow hormone therapy before the age of 16.

If the New York Post story is correct, the child is 15 years old. As far as I’m concerned, if one is too young to sign a contract or open a checking account or join the military, then one is too young to be entrusted with the fundamentally life-changing decision of transgender “therapy” because of that’s what one wants.
Period.
I would have done everything I could as a father to oppose such a move until my daughter was 18.
Now, let’s see just how tolerant of dissent this forum is.

agreed & i’d do the same
and fight against a state system that would force me to accede to (and support physically and monetarily) such a ‘choice’ at that age

That opens a whole different moral and legal kettle of fish, though.

She is Dwayne Wade’s daughter and was very aware of her true identity at a very young age. She also educated her parents a lot on trans issues. At least she has very supportive parents.
If you don’t have any trans children so not sure why you have to repeat you wouldn’t be supportive.
Zaya is actually 13 years old so she knew who she was when she was younger.

On the other hand, this is exactly the kind of overreach conservatives would have used to fear monger, say, five or six years ago. “They’re going to start arresting people for using the wrong pronouns!” I can see the knitted brow expressing genuine concern on the face of a vintage, bow tied Tucker Carlson come to life in my imagination, followed by the “Onion” article mocking the hysteria, but well, here we are.
I can understand thinking the father is being petty or an asshole, but this strikes me as a private family matter, something that is none of my business, much less an issue that requires legal intervention.

I have no idea whether RuPaul has transitioned or not, but gawd, does she look good or what. Okay, this was almost 30 years ago, but damn, she was hot…

so far as i’ve read, its all makeup & clothes
It’s easy to forget about gender-bending celebrities like Rupaul simply being a normal man. Well, “normal” might be pushing the envelope a little, but you see him (her?) as a camped-up lady so often, you can’t imagine him being anything else.

Rue Paul is a female impersonater who is not transgender. In fact, he may not be gay, either. In college,I knew a female impersonater who was not trans, not gay, not bi, married to a woman, with children. He just liked the whole drag scene, performing, etc.

I guess as a gay man, I’ve tired of getting involved in controversy here on JPR regarding topics relating to transgender/GLBT people. I support GLBT people unconditionally, period. So I sort of posted that about RuPaul to say, with regard to transgender people and people who behave in ways which do not conform to gender stereotypes, they are not all victims, and some of them are super successful.
So I will bow out of this thread. Cheers.

I’m not sure there is any right answer to any of this. We have an interesting variety of human beings in the world, which should give us a great life experience. I’m convinced we would all be pretty happy if we embraced each others’ differences, instead of worrying about who wins and who loses in some kind of zero sum game. I’m not sure I should post anything about the trans gender battles, but it pains me that there are so many examples of people turning the issue into something they can use for political gain, or to cause bad feelings between us.
