    we aren’t “pushing the party left,”
    we are bringing the party home

    = perfect.

    and so predictable, the first response tweets out of the box are conservatives saying dems are the party of racism & the new deal was racist too.

    both have an element of truth, but not the majority of truth or a blanket truth.

    but twitler isn’t good for nuance, similar to NewSpeak that is its model.

    How is going back progressive? The Latin translation of going back is ‘regressive’.

    Going back little less, some might remember:

    New Left: “In United States, the movement was associated with the anti-war college-campus protest movements, including the Free Speech Movement. ”
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Left

    “Free Speech Movement was the first mass act of civil disobedience on an American college campus in the 1960s.[4] Students insisted that the university administration lift the ban of on-campus political activities and acknowledge the students’ right to free speech and academic freedom.”

    Brief influence of  anti-war New Left in Democratic Party lead to warmongering interventionists and imperialists to switch to Republican party, hence the name “Neoconservatives”. During Obama, Neocons completed their return and takeover of Democratic party, while the New left inclusiveness turned into authoritarian identity politics attack against freedom of speech.

    It was not FDR who made New Deal happen. It was the mass socialist movements, who needed to be placated and pacified by New Deal, so that capitalist class would not perish in revolution.

      Yuh, and the fairies of County Clare created the universe in 3 days.

      FDR, 1944

      “This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights—among them the right of free speech, free press, free worship, trial by jury, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They were our rights to life and liberty.

      As our Nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness.

      We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.

      In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.

      Among these are:

      The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;

      The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

      The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

      The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

      The right of every family to a decent home;

      The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

      The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

      The right to a good education.

      All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

      America’s own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for our citizens. For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world….”

      AOC rocks.

        In my view progressives should be pushing AOC etc. further to the left instead of clapping hands when they are placating the Neoconservative party establishment. I don’t consider personality cult good answer to this constructive criticism.

            I like Niko House style regarding candidates. Diligent study and comparison of their positions on issues and factual constructive criticism where it’s due.  We change the discourse by participating in the discourse, and change also ourselves, our opinions and attitudes, participatory process goes both ways. “Be the flow!”.

            Dialogue between peers, leveling with each other. As we are doing here, already transforming society in our small ways.

          @voltairine How is referencing FDR placating the neocon establishment, as you call it? FDR was hardly a neocon; in fact, they didn’t exist then. AOC is referring to a time when the Democratic Party did a far better job of representing the working class than it does now. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

            there is very little doubt that the purpose of the new deal was to save the system, or that without the new deal a starving unemployed populace would have, eventually taken matters to the streets.

            there was plenty of opposition to the new deal from the left within the dem party. huey long was among those who wanted the new deal to go farther.

            but, after a 1/2 century of rolling back the new deal, a return of those programs would be welcome progress.

              @rampart It is unquestionably true that the New Deal saved capitalism. Interestingly enough, it was attacked as socialist by the conservatives of the time, and it certainly had socialist components.

              Huey Long was a corrupt motherfucker and a demagogue. I don’t know if I’d call him “left.” That said, I’m no expert on him, either.

        He said other things too, out of earshot of the public, just like all political leaders do, making it clear that he was a member of the ruling class.

        Also, there was little to no awareness of the threat posed by ‘climate change’ as a result of our industrial activity. Their reality back then, was not in the context of a collapsing global ecology. We CANNOT go back to the ‘good old days’. Human society must be transformed.

            Don’t expect me to concoct a twenty year plan for transforming the economic, energy, transportation and agricultural infrastructures, while at the same time, crashing human populations, teaching the next generation that capitalism faudulent, AND devising the technology to extract trillions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. I just have a high school diploma. It will take people much smarter than I, along with a global cooperative effort.

            Denialism has to be dealt with first, though.

              My reason for posing the question was because, while I agree that we need rapid transformation if we are going to survive, it probably won’t happen, unless a devastating natural catastrophe of unprecedented magnitude never seen before in the history of human beings forces the transformation.

              That said, with an entirely institutionalized, complex, interconnected, interdependent socio-economic, political, and judicial morass that is hopelessly FUBAR, ending denialism is a monumental task, and in the meantime, we all gotta eat, and the best way I can see to keep everyone in food, in the US at least (oh, and medicine, and school, and beer, etc) is to elect Bernie, and as many progressives as possible.

              I wake up every day grateful for New Deal policies like my/our Social Security retirement, and fuck the Republican party for its eternal war on Social Security and Medicare and other social safety nets, and any New Democrats, and anyone else, who is, or has been, working to end our social safety net programs and co-opt our public commons for their personal profit.

              Dreams of utopia are wonderful, but bringing about utopia is one more galaxy away, after the 2 years, 301 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes and 5 seconds that Trump has been in office.

              Anytime I have brought up the subject of general strikes and simultaneous other direct actions undertaken to remove the plutarchs that have purchased our government from power, I’ve been deafened by the roar of crickets.

              So I am resigned to the apparent fact that I have to do the best I can with what I can, and what I have to work with, until further information becomes available.

                Yes, we gotta eat, and to eat we must sell our freedom and dignity in wage slavery to the capitalist.

                General strike can be powerful tactic, but as we have seen, the zeitgeist does not prefer the syndicalist very antagonistic form of organizing. All past experience of the horrible violence against strikes is not forgotten, and if there is better short term tactic available to liberate from wage slavery, to most it is preferable.

                We have such tactic, the general idea of UBI has already widespread support among population.

        @ravensong great fdr quoteswhen that generation landed at d day and the pacific islands they knew that they were fighting for the 4 freedoms and the new deal.

        that generation had to pass before these reactionaries, of both parties, could try to take that away.

        my father, and I, got degrees with the gi bill. my father’s home was financed with gi bill loans. his health care was from the va hospital.  there was no question of us being “takers” who only wanted “free stuff.”

          “that generation had to pass before these reactionaries, of both parties, could try to take that away”.

          Most excellently said.  These reactionaries (I prefer the word fascists) are the true regressives, stifling human progress and human evolution at the same time.

          Those who don’t learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.

        I would be very curious to know what Bernie and everybody else think of this great quote:

        It is assumed that labor is available only in connection with capital; that nobody labors unless somebody else, owning capital, somehow by the use of it induces him to labor. This assumed, it is next considered whether it is best that capital shall hire laborers, and thus induce them to work by their own consent, or buy them and drive them to it without their consent. Having proceeded so far, it is naturally concluded that all laborers are either hired laborers or what we call slaves. And further, it is assumed that whoever is once a hired laborer is fixed in that condition for life.

        Now there is no such relation between capital and labor as assumed, nor is there any such thing as a free man being fixed for life in the condition of a hired laborer. Both these assumptions are false, and all inferences from them are groundless.

        Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.
