For the 29th straight year, the members of the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution demanding an end to the 60-year U.S. economic blockade on Cuba.
184 nations voted in favor of the resolution, while the U.S. and Israel voted against it. Three nations—Brazil, Colombia, and Ukraine—abstained.

AOC is urging President Joe Biden’s administration to lift the economic embargo on Cuba, which she claims is inflicting further pain on the residents of the island nation.
In a statement on Thursday night, the New York Congresswoman said, “We are seeing Cubans rise up and protest for their rights like never before. We stand in solidarity with them, and we condemn the anti-democratic actions led by President Diaz-Canel. The suppression of the media, speech and protests are all gross violations of civil rights.”

“We also must name the U.S. contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo. Last month, once again, the U.N. voted overwhelmingly to call on the United States to lift its embargo on Cuba. The embargo is absurdly cruel and, like too many other U.S. policies targeting Latin Americans, the cruelty is the point,” she continued.

Finally, she added, “I outright reject the Biden administration’s defense of the embargo. It is never acceptable for us to use cruelty as a point of leverage against every day people.”

Joe Biden: “We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime.”

They are good words, but still only words. Will AOC actually do anything about this, like voting against everything Biden proposes until he lifts the embargo against Cuba, which he can do at the stroke of a pen?

Her track record suggests she will just posture but do nothing.

Back in March, 80 House Democrats (including The Squad) Urged Biden to Repeal Trump’s ‘Cruel’ Sanctions on Cuba and Reverse US Hostility.

“With the stroke of a pen, you can assist struggling Cuban families and promote a more constructive approach,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the president.

Joe Biden is no Barack Obama

        • President Obama became the first sitting president to visit the country since Calvin Coolidge in 1928.
        • Obama had asked Congress to begin to lift the embargo against Cuba during his State of the Union address. “In Cuba, we are ending a policy that was long past its expiration date. When what you’re doing doesn’t work for fifty years, it’s time to try something new,” President Obama said in tonight’s speech.

Obama took all of the steps that the executive branch can to normalize relations with the Communist nation but only Congress can lift the longstanding trade embargo.

Obama called the opening of relations with Cuba “irreversible.”

        But, then came Trump.

President Trump added sanctions, including sanctions against Cuban Americans sending money to family members living in Cuba.

        November 24, 2020

Western Union closed its 407 locations across Cuba, a sanctions-driven move that will leave thousands bereft of remittances on an island that depends heavily on them — or force them to use less reliable ways to bring in money.

The closure of offices that have operated for more than 20 years in Cuba resulted from a barrage of sanctions that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposed while courting conservative Cuban-American voters in Florida.

Now it looks like Biden is stuck. He should have lifted Trump’s sanctions when he had the chance. As protests mount in Cuba, Biden will find it increasingly difficult to lift sanctions, thus breaking another campaign promise.

He lied from the beginning. And those 80 Democrats have done everything they’ve been told to do when it comes to voting since Biden took office, so I don’t think they are worth anything.

Biden can lift the sanctions with a stroke of a pen. He has not and will not. That’s ALL on him. That’s all that matters. He wants Cubans to suffer, in order for the American Empire to be able to exploit them and to profit at their expense. I think Christians call that “evil,” and I think they’re right.

Another lobsided vote with the US on the wrong side. What an embarrassment. Remind me how America are the good guys again?

When push comes to shove, AOC folds, every single time. Because $$$.

So, you know, anybody can complain. I remain unimpressed.

Yes, but 80 Democrats, plus AOC, urged Biden to lift Trump’s sanctions back on March 1. So, they put the ball in Biden’s court. Slow Joe didn’t think it was a priority. Not only that, but the Biden administration voted “No” at the UN.

Maybe they think they know what they’re doing —> sanctions + pandemic = protests = chaos.

As we know, what matters is what Congress’ corporate overlords support. And if that is in direct opposition to whatever those 81 Democrats support, then the most that Nancy Pelosi will allow is theater. Barking.

In my view, the sooner that people come to understand that we no longer have a representative democracy, the better. Because no change will happen “working within the system” or whatever metaphor people use to explain corruption and legal forms of bribery.

I do WANT to be wrong, so I apologize if I am just really negative here, but AOC has been a serious disappointment to me. AND the Squad.

but I’m laying out hope that someday there will be enough grassroots progressive / liberals to take on the system. The Squad is growing. Hopefully Nina will join Congress. But until that day comes, all they can do is make noise.

Pelosi must go and be replaced by someone who is not bought and paid for…and of course, we need a grassroots president. As I think about it, this all seems like a tall order.

According to Max Blumenthal she tweeted this after deleting her

first one, which only supported the protesters. She got too much

angry feedback from the first one; thus she just caved.
