PHOENIX – Hospital officials are warning against home remedies for COVID-19 after a metro Phoenix man died and his wife was hospitalized when they ingested a chemical touted by President Donald Trump as a possible coronavirus treatment.

During a press conference last week, and again Monday, Trump mentioned that chloroquine, a drug long used to prevent malaria, had shown the potential to combat COVID-19.

The substance, also known as chloroquine phosphate, hasn’t gone through rigorous scientific testing as a coronavirus treatment.
      …………..
They felt sick within 30 minutes, Brooks said. The man died shortly after arriving at an emergency room. The woman was resuscitated and is being cared for at a Phoenix Banner hospital.

Obviously they exceeded the LD50 dosage. And what doctor gave them a prescription.

These two hour press conference daily dances are so far successful with helping him hide all the conflicting statements (made a few of them just in the past hour)… The bullshit ensues… He’s even getting ready to bring on the Secretary of Education so that we an be amazed days from now when he’s forgetting what he said today… I feel sick watching this shit and Betsy DeVos is up next to talk about K-12 distance education?  Get ready to be slicked up for THAT.

You do realize that the drug combo you are talking about is, starting tomorrow will be used in New York to try and get a grip on things.

The state of New York is starting clinical trials with this drug. Gov. Cuomo is authorizing it and says he’s optimistic.

Several other countries are doing studies too. So this is not just a Trump thing.

During a Sunday press briefing, Cuomo said 750,000 doses of chloroquine, 70,000 doses of hydroxychloroquine and 10,000 doses of Zithromax were acquired by New York state for the trial.

      Wait whut?

So, Arizona Man dies because they took a prescription drug, that is being used for treatment of Covid-19 patients in Hospital situations?

Yes, Trump is dumb, but people shouldn’t be taking medicines like that without a prescription dosage.

However, this again, is why we should have Universal Health Care to begin with.  People could actually go to the doctors without fearing a $30K bill, and be provided with an actual treatment plan.  You can’t just go by whatever you hear.

This just goes to show how desperate people are.

Holy Crap. people!! Quit believing everything you fucking read, especially when it’s first reported.

“The toxic ingredient they consumed was not the medication form of chloroquine, used to treat malaria in humans. Instead, it was an ingredient listed on a parasite treatment for fish.”

This guy drank FISH TANK CLEANER. That’s poison! There’s was nothing prescription about it. Very convenient that that rather important fact was left out of the story.

The information we’re getting from the media is horrible because most of it isn’t centered on putting out useful information, it’s focus is “orange man bad”. As long at it fits that narrative, the media is going to run it. That’s not to say that I or anyone here approves of Trump, but what it does mean is that you have to filter what you are hearing with the knowledge that the main story line is to push a political message and not to hand out useful medical information.

Regarding the combination of hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin — which Trump tweeted could be “one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine” — a single “small study” shows the combination helped against the SARS strain that causes Covid-19, the CDC said, but “did not assess clinical benefits.”
        ………….
Chloroquine’s side effects include seizures, nausea, vomiting, deafness, vision changes and low blood pressure. Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, however, are reportedly well-tolerated in Covid-19 patients, according to the CDC.
        ………..

The drugs may be effective against the novel coronavirus, Fauci said, but more data is needed to “show it is truly safe and effective under the conditions of Covid-19.”
For these reasons, the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drugs for coronavirus treatment, despite Trump claiming Thursday the agency had done so.
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump claimed during a White House briefing on Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration had approved the “very powerful” drug chloroquine to treat coronavirus.
        ………..

“It’s shown very encouraging — very, very encouraging early results. And we’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. And that’s where the FDA has been so great. They — they’ve gone through the approval process; it’s been approved. And they did it — they took it down from many, many months to immediate. So we’re going to be able to make that drug available by prescription or states,” Trump said.
He added: “Normally the FDA would take a long time to approve something like that, and it’s — it was approved very, very quickly and it’s now approved, by prescription.”
        …………

Facts First: Chloroquine has not been approved by the FDA to treat the coronavirus — and nor has any other drug, the FDA made clear in a post-briefing statement that said “there are no FDA-approved therapeutics or drugs to treat, cure or prevent COVID-19.” Because chloroquine has been approved for other purposes, doctors are legally allowed to prescribe it for the unapproved or “off-label” use of treating the coronavirus if they want. But its safety and effectiveness has not been proven with regard to the coronavirus. FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn, speaking after Trump at the briefing, said that chloroquine would be tested through a “large, pragmatic clinical trial” with coronavirus patients.

Critics of Trump have repeatedly condemned his offered spotty, misleading, or outright false public health information from the presidential podium.

As Matthew Yglesias at Vox wrote earlier on Monday, “Airing Trump’s daily ‘briefings’ live misinforms people and undermines public health officials.”

“When a person turns on the television and sees the president of the United States giving inaccurately optimistic assessments of the progress of testing, vaccine research, and treatment it encourages people to be less careful with their hand-washing and social distancing than they otherwise might be,” Yglesias wrote, “That costs lives.”

Trump Works To Rewrite Narrative On Corona Virus Response

Faced with endless video clips of Donald Trump downplaying the escalating outbreak, Trump aides and allies are working furiously to instead highlight the president’s recent actions and comments.

Their effort comprises three tactics: Blanket supporters with detailed timelines of every action the Trump administration took. Amplify praise of those actions. And forcefully push back against anyone who criticizes those actions.

Just over seven months from the November election, Trump’s aides and allies realize the president’s campaign for a second term has been completely transformed in a matter of weeks. It will now come down to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his response to a devastated economy, according to seven people familiar with the situation, including four who speak directly with the president.
        ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Trump has been fighting back through his now-daily news conferences at the White House, boasting his administration has done an “extraordinary” and “incredible job” while falling back on a familiar tactic of blaming the media.

      @stockholmer

It is one thing to criticize the actions of an individual – I’m fine with that.  It is fine to question their judgment.  Even their intellect.  To basically sneer at this person’s tragic death though?

We dont gravedance at JPR, because it is, in general, a despicable practice.  The way you speak of thinning the herd one “thick twat at a time” seriously made me feel sick to read.

The person is dead, for basically doing something unwise based on the advice of an utter fool who happens to be our President.  I find that incredibly sad.

Perhaps a little compassion us more in order.

If this gets me a warning for calling you out (I reported your post, too) then so be it.  Frankly, I expect better from everyone here.  I’m not a mod or admin, but I’ve been here quite a while – and that shit isnt okay.

Fair is fair. This isn’t just a stretch or spin; it’s an outright lie. The media could cover his actual fuck ups, and stop making stuff up, but they have an even worse aversion to anything true than he does. It’s a tragedy that this person, probably in a state of panic, attempted this without consulting a doctor. Exploiting this guy’s death for a cheap shot on Trump and cheap laughs at this guy’s expense for doing something stupid is some next level scumbaggerry. TDS types are proving themselves to be everything they claim to hate about Trump.

What Trump actually said: “It may work, it may not work,” he said on Friday. “I feel good about it. It’s just a feeling.

What Faucci actually said: “Fundamentally, I think it probably is going to be safe, but I like to prove things first,” Fauci said. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/20/trump-coronavirus-question-attack-reporter-over-fears

Apparently, Trump differs from the experts in that he wants the drugs fast tracked while the experts say more studies are required. It was the media who spun this into “Trump said it’s a miracle cure, and the experts say it’s useless.”  It was taken out of context in order to make him look worse.

As others have pointed out, the hope that the active ingredient (not fish tank cleaner) may prove useful as treatment is not some nonsense he pulled out of his ass, but is currently being researched, and considered by others with more credibility. But no one has committed to it being an absolute guaranteed cure. No one.

The study Trump and others have touted was anything but randomized. Instead, Covid-19 patients were treated with either hydroxychloroquine or the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, an antibiotic also known as Zithromax, at a hospital in Marseille, France. They were compared to coronavirus patients at hospitals in Marseille, Nice, Avignon, and Briançon who didn’t receive these drugs.

The study doesn’t show that patients lived longer or were more likely to recover, but instead shows that the amount of virus in the blood was reduced much faster in the patients who took hydroxychloroquine and even faster in the six patients who took the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.

That result is encouraging, but for patients who are not gravely ill, it doesn’t tell how to weigh the side effects of hydroxychloroquine against the potential benefits. That’s the reason for a clinical study like the one starting in New York.

But for doctors on the front lines, particularly in New York City, where hospitals are becoming overwhelmed and where there are many patients on ventilators, the drugs could be an immediate option. As Cuomo put it in a press conference Friday, “where a person is in dire circumstance, [you] try what you can.” https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/22/why-trump-at-odds-with-medical-experts-over-malaria-drugs-against-covid-19/

Banner Health said on Monday the couple in their 60s got sick within half an hour of ingesting the additive. The man could not be resuscitated at hospital but the woman was able to throw up much of the chemical.

A Phoenix-area man has died and his wife was in critical condition after the couple took chloroquine phosphate, an additive used to clean fish tanks that is also found in an anti-malaria medication touted by Donald Trump as a treatment for Covid-19.

“Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure,” the woman told NBC.

She said her advice would be: “Don’t take anything. Don’t believe anything. Don’t believe anything that the president says and his people … call your doctor.”

        https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/24/coronavirus-cure-kills-man-after-trump-touts-chloroquine-phosphate

Good advice, and worth repeating.  Don’t believe anything Trump says.

Or anything Trump supporters say, for that matter.  They’ll do or say anything to protect and defend their beloved leader.

I don’t understand seeing the phrase TDS in a board like this. I would like a place where I can criticize both Trump & Democrats when they deserve it. I don’t hate Democrats to the point that I defend Trump.

Trump should be very careful what he says in public. It is his responsibility.

Sure he talked about the drug like it was practically a sure thing, but he also acknowledged that it may or may not actually work which is quoted directly above. That is just simply a fact. If only that part got as much attention as “Trump claims miracle cure…”

Since he contradicts himself all the time, this childish gotcha practice of cherry picking his statements in order to construct a narrative always leads to a misrepresentation of reality. I happen to think the whole truth matters, others consider such things frivolous, and secondary to the simple joy of mindless, mouth foaming rage. To each their own, I guess.

The Chloroquine hype didn’t even come from him and he’s not the first nor is he the only one to talk about it. There were the Chinese researchers claiming it is beneficial, the Italian and South Korean health authorities, Cuomo doing trials in NY and expressing optimism, Fauci saying it’s probably safe, etc. Are all of them also culpable in this man’s death to varying degrees? If not, why not?

If it’s the study fauci later talked about, it started with 26 people & ended up with only 20 who were reported on.

        Of the 6 ‘drop-outs’ : 1 left the study (no explanation given), 1 or 2 couldn’t tolerate the drug, 1 or 2 died, & I’ve missed somebody.

They reported on the 20 people (not a decent sample size for any significant conclusions to be drawn) who were left.

Fauci said it was probably safe (in correct dosage) — he didn’t say however that it was probably effective, or a cure, let alone a ‘game changer’

Trump a/o his family has a financial interest somewhere, imho.

          @coldmountaintrail

Yea, that was my understanding that Fauci thinks it’s probably safe but he doesn’t know know if it will work or not. That was how he contradicted Trump’s claims which started this whole thing. However, when pressed Trump did concede that he really didn’t know one way or the other either, just that he “felt good about it” which is pretty similar to what Cuomo said. They twisted his arm into telling the truth, so run with that and leave it alone. That is what I find so frustrating about the tendency to only cover the most ridiculous things Trump says for sport. The effect is that it is those statements that people internalize because those are the ones that get repeated. Typical media sensationalism, imo.

Research is scant and inconclusive, but it looks like we’ll have a better idea soon. WHO is doing a megatrial with that and other possible drugs. I believe (not completely sure) the initial hype regarding chloroquine came from Chinese researchers and it snowballed from there.

Results from COVID-19 patients are murky. Chinese researchers who report treating more than 100 patients with chloroquine touted its benefits in a  letter in BioScience, but the data underlying the claim have not been published. All in all, more than 20 COVID-19 studies in China used chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, WHO notes, but their results have been hard to come by. “WHO is engaging with Chinese colleagues at the mission in Geneva and have received assurances of improved collaboration; however, no data has been shared regarding the chloroquine studies.” https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/who-launches-global-megatrial-four-most-promising-coronavirus-treatments

if trump says things “for sport” in the middle of what appears to be an epidemic, that’s on him.

let alone when he says things that are divisive, or flat-out lies, or attacks the press for asking legitimate questions, or lays the blame for his own failures, which are massive, on other people, other parties, other countries

your report reiterates the ‘no data’ problem.  I haven’t seen any serious data on the efficacy of chloroquine or even a definition of efficacy — reduce fever, cough, clear virus, reduce sick time — what, exactly, does it do?  for what percent of those treated, to what degree?  death rate for those treated v. controls?  (the study fauci talked about removed deaths and those who didn’t tolerate it — or rather, they were classified as ‘didn’t complete’ rather than ‘dead’)

That’s why it’s so *easy* to be misled when you just hear some vague hype from hucksters like trump — or drug pushers in general.

This is what happens when you have an idiot with access to Twitter and a media that won’t report how stupid he is. People are frightened, they aren’t getting proper reporting from the news outlets most of them watch, and frankly, many of them think the Idiot in Chief can do no wrong. It is, after all, the Democrat’s fault all this is happening.

It breaks my heart that this man is dead and his wife may never be the same. I can only hope this is the only case, but I fear that many will fall to the false claims and inaccurate information that’s flooding the information stream, some of it mistaken, some of it deliberately put out there to sell something.

Trump is tweeting whatever pops into his head at the moment, and I imagine Pence is on his knees thanking God for Revelations. Finally, the believers will get to see the end of the world they’ve worked and prayed so hard for the past two thousand years.
