VIENNA (Reuters) – Multiple gunmen opened fire at six locations in central Vienna near the central synagogue on Monday, killing at least one person and wounding 15 in what Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described as a “repulsive terrorist attack”.

Several “heavily armed and dangerous” attackers were still on the loose as police shut down and sealed off large parts of central Vienna in a manhunt, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said. Residents were urged to stay indoors.

“We have brought several special forces units together that are now searching for the presumed terrorists. I am therefore not limiting it to an area of Vienna because these are mobile perpetrators,” Nehammer told broadcaster ORF.

Kurz said the army would protect sites in the capital so the police could focus on anti-terror operations. Speaking to ORF, he said the attackers “were very well equipped with automatic weapons” and had “prepared professionally”.

And two world wars have started there. Even here in Japan, there are still a few whackjobs who yearn for the “glory days” of WWII.

Who knows? In the ’70s, I knew a guy from Vienna who told me that there were still Nazi sympathizers in his city.

@artfromark Vienna’s a beautiful city. The Hapsburg palace has some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. I’m lucky enough to have been there once. It’s a shame this happened there.

who was named after a famous German composer, told me how nice Vienna was, despite the Nazi sympathizers. And I once had a classmate from Vienna here in Japan who told me I should visit the city one day. And I, being an aficianado of classical music, would really like to visit there one day, since that city has such a rich musical history. In addition to Vienna, Salzburg (Mozart), Bonn (Beethoven), Magdeburg (Bach) and Halle (Händel) would be some of my destinations in the German-speaking world.
