U.S. Attorney General William Barr said the coronavirus pandemic was placing “unprecedented burdens” on Americans’ civil liberties during a Tuesday radio interview with broadcast journalist Hugh Hewitt.

Though Barr said the stay-at-home orders that states issued to contain the outbreak were necessary as the virus began spreading across the U.S., he described them as “disturbingly close to house arrest” and said states must soon begin replacing the orders with more targeted restrictions.

“These are very, very burdensome impingements on liberty,” Barr told Hewitt. “We adopted them, we have to remember, for the limited purpose of slowing down the spread. That is, bending the curve. We didn’t adopt them as the comprehensive way of dealing with this disease.”

Barr’s statements came as governors across the country were discussing how best to reopen their state economies after shutdowns that began in March resulted in business closures and skyrocketing unemployment numbers.

Right. Because we’ve all been fitted with ankle bracelets and threatened with revocation of our bail/parole if we venture more than “x” number of miles from our houses.
If we were making ANY inroads into finding a comprehensive way to dealing with this disease, he might have a loose philosophical argument. But we (collectively, the government) aren’t doing anything close to comprehensive – or really much of anything at all – which leaves this as the only option short of ‘get out there and take yer chances, bub!’

Gads, the idiocy of these people.

Because he has stocks and investments not making enough money during this lock down, that’s why.
WE can suffer all they want, but he is one of our leaders and shouldn’t have to be inconvenienced.
If a few hundred thousand of us get incapacitated or die, that is the price he is willing to pay.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.

If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.

House arrest,my back paw.As someone pointed out above,it isn’t even close—although house arrest WOULD be one way of reducing space in overcrowded prisons.

Nor do they seem to look at history.Staying indoors and wearing masks were the recommended means of the last pandemic we had,the 1918 flu epidemic.

The shallowness and self pity is appalling.
