Not sexist or racist just unappetizing
It’s an historic day for all Americans … who love pancakes — “Aunt Jemima” is officially out, and Pearl Milling Company is in.
PepsiCo — the parent company of the syrup giant — announced Tuesday it is “starting a new day with Pearl Milling Company … rooted in the brand’s historic beginnings and its mission to create moments that matter at the breakfast table.”
That’s a lot of corporate-speak for … we scrapped “Aunt Jemima” and created a new logo that’s still tied to history, but without the stereotyped image of a Black woman with a headscarf in the kitchen.
PepsiCo filed to trademark the new logo on February 1. You’ll recall, last summer the company said Jemima had to go after it took a look at all its brands to “ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers’ expectations….” PepsiCo says the Pearl Milling Company name is a nod to the 19th-century company that created the original ready-made pancake mix..

Sales were down, so they will call it by another name and say it is new.

supplementing their incomes, and how good the the real thing tastes. Keep it local/natural, not GMO corn syrup.
I grew up on Vermont Maid, which at least had some maple syrup in it. Now I just tap my own trees.

Happy now, no more Aunt Jemima on the label? 🙂
Aunt Millie better watch her ass!
All kidding aside, they were between a rock and a hard place, as the names “Aunt” and “Jemima” while both excellent names on their own have as combined in “Aunt Jemima” been mocked enough, I suppose, to make it problematic.
Semi-seriously, the TV show Friends is just one critical re-watching away from joining The Dukes of Hazzard on the list of shows that got pulled from being aired. Friends inexplicably has people living in a Manhattan bereft of all minorities. Then there were the homophobic jokes, and the decision to turn the fairly normal Italian-American character into a joke by exploring the “humor” of him in later seasons being depicted as mentally challenged, and in a way that mocked young Italian American males.
To his everlasting credit, David Schwimmer insisted on a change, and he/we got Aisha Tyler as a recurring character for a season.

I have researched and concluded that in fact Pearl Bailey never worked at the mill.

While vacationing in New England, I bought a pricy bottle of the real thing and stashed it away. Cut to airport security line as my carry on goes through the x-ray. Officious TSA guy opens my bag and pulls out the syrup. Oh shit, forgot about it. Rather than toss it into the bin of forbidden items, the SOB crams it into his pants pocket and tells me his family will enjoy it. Still pissed.

No? Guess liberal virtue-signals don’t care about that. Symbolism is everything.
Anyway, when we want real maple syrup, we import it from Vermont or Canada. I haven’t eaten Aunt Jemima since I was a kid in the 60s.
