On my way home from work today, I heard Amy Goodman describe Mike Bloomberg as the Nevada Pinata after the smashing he took in the debate last night, so I just had to mention that. Nice one, Amy! The arrogant, petulant multibillionaire, the 8th richest man in the United States, and Platonic Ideal of Oligarchs, was completely discredited before a live television audience of at least 29 million Americans.

It was a wondrous and beautiful thing. Bernie Sanders cruised through the shells and torpedoes of the debate virtually unscathed, while inflicting major damage on both Bloomberg and Buttigieg, cementing his frontrunner status just two weeks before Super Tuesday. Everything looked good. Until the last question.

For whatever reason, Chuck Todd asked each candidate whether they thought whoever had a plurality of votes should be made the nominee if they didn’t have a majority of the delegates. Only Bernie stood up for democracy and said Yes. The rest, including Elizabeth Warren, said it would be OK for party elites to take the nomination away from the favorite of Democratic primary voters.

It was shameful. It was a sign of the panic gripping Democratic political elites. It triggered outrage and panic on the part of Bernie’s broad base of progressive supporters. It was also an incredibly stupid thing to do.

First, this will motivate Bernie’s legions of supporters more than ever. Just when it was possible that some of us might get complacent, they wave a red flag in our faces and announce almost five months ahead of time that at least some of them are planning to brazenly steal the nomination from Bernie in Milwaukee. More people will volunteer and get off their asses. Travel plans to Milwaukee will be made. Vacation plans will be changed, quite possibly including my own.

Forewarned is forearmed. The idiots showed us their battle plan months ahead of time! Stupid, stupid, stupid. By doing this, they just increased the odds of Bernie securing the nomination on the first ballot. It’s all over alternative media and much of the corporate media as well. Backroom deals are called that because they’re conducted out of sight, out of the public eye. This open plotting was lit up by the neon lights of Las Vegas itself.

Meanwhile, one of Obama’s right hand men, David Plouffe, is running around the political talk show circuit telling the media elites what an incredibly stupid thing this idea is, because it would utterly destroy the Democratic Party. He’s right. He is also showing that Obama himself probably thinks it’s an incredibly stupid idea. As hard as it may be for some of you to believe, it is very possible that Obama thinks a two term Trump would be an even worse hit to his legacy than a Sanders presidency, and that is absolutely true.

I mean, does Obama really want to go down in history as the last Democratic President, the one who set the stage for the utter destruction of his party? Doubtful.

The Democratic elites have every reason to panic. They thought a Republican billionaire could buy the nomination as easily as he bought some of them, and that brilliant plan is already going up in smoke. Bloomberg’s numbers will take a hit, all of their acceptable candidates will stay in the race longer and split up the neoliberal and sucker vote even more, making it even more difficult for any of them to hit the 15% threshold necessary to win any delegates in any primary.

We progressives, OTOH, have no reason to panic, but we have every reason to increase our resolve and work even harder to insure that Bernie Sanders wins a majority of delegates outright and, failing that, to go to Milwaukee and demonstrate to the elected and unelected party officials that if they try this authoritarian move to deny the will of the people, there will be hell to pay.

To conclude, the rigging of the primary to steal the nomination from Bernie is less likely now than it was 24 hours ago, not more. Doing the thing isn’t necessary for us right now, will only increase your stress level, and can have unfortunate effects on your blood pressure. Stay the course, and we’ll win this thing yet.

Thanks for reading and have a nice night.

And those around here know I have no love for Obama.

But really, I’m thinking Obama’s smart enough to realize that Bernie will work in any way he can, and yes a lot of it will be up to Obama and Dem leadership, to make the country a better place for everyone here, and that may mean compromise as much as I don’t like it. Bernie is not going to hold a grudge and try to discredit him without good cause. Not going to use scorched earth tactics against the neoliberal wing of the party, as much as they deserve it, but try to get the most done for everyone as possible. And yes it will be up to use to scare the crap out of them to bring them out of their smoke filled back rooms.

Thanks for this OB. I’m being oddly optimistic at the moment. I was in a piss-poor mood a couple of weeks ago before Iowa. We live in interesting times.

In America, “Liberty” means “Free to Die in Service of Capital” - Amfortas the hippie.

Most of today’s elites have the moral and social reasoning capacities of spoiled toddlers.

“People of privilege will always risk their complete destruction rather than surrender any material part of their advantage...but the privileged also feel that their privileges, however egregious they may seem to others, are a solemn, basic, God-right. The sensitivity of the poor to injustice is a trivial thing c

@punxsutawney Sometimes I wondered what I did to piss off some Chinese person, since “May you live in interesting times” is an old Chinese curse.

There’s another Chinese saying that the party elites may wish to consider in regards to Bernie Sanders and especially regarding the many voters who now support him: Beware the wrath of the patient man.

Thanks OB. I am 90 miles away from Milwaukee and ready to drive down there if the DNC shit hits the fan, with or without my guillotine!

Good analysis, ohio, just remember what they did in chicago 68, hippie punching is what they do. The media will downplay the unrest. How many mericans know much about the yellow vests in france. I fear to inact real change general protest will not suffice but im hoping for the best, come on super tuesday!!
