As we inch closer to that dreaded day, I’m hearing from more of my friends and family about the need to vote for Biden. A month ago, none of these people liked him; and all those from California were appalled by the selection of Harris as the VP candidate. But as time marches on, they’ve all become vote-blue-no-matter-who disciples. I do understand their concern: Trump is horrible, insane, and dangerous. I, too, want to see him gone — preferably in cuffs. Still, I just can’t agree that Biden in and of himself will be much of an improvement. So as it stands now, I’m voting downticket — mainly to support Pramila Jayapal — and probably Green for the presidency.

But that’s not enough for my friends and family. They want Trump GONE and they’re not even thinking of anything else. However, after quite a bit of thought about the possible outcomes, I’ve concluded that control of Congress is a much bigger issue. To wit:

      If Biden Wins

Scenario 1: Congress remains unchanged (ie, senate controlled by McConnell, house controlled by Pelosi).
In this situation, we’ll more or less repeat Obama’s second term. That was great for the 1%, but for the rest us? Not so much. Drones; extrajudicial killings; deportations; kids in cages; billionnaire bailouts with no consideration for the average citizen; smoke-and-mirrors healthcare “reform”; private prisons; refusal to hold accountable any of the war (and other) criminals from the previous administration; no support for Indigenous land rights; at best, token support for black and brown lives; moderate republicans selected for the supreme court, with possibly none being approved; no interest whatsoever in actually trying to reverse the authoritarian-capitalist nightmare policies that were put in place by the preceding republican — and democrat — administrations; and that all-time favourite: reaching across the aisle, otherwise known as capitulation.

Scenario 2: Republicans take both houses of congress.
This is a short one: The repubs successfully impeach and convict Biden, Harris, and Pelosi. Game over. See Scenario 5.

Scenario 3: Democrats take both houses of congress.
This is like Back to the Future 2008: Gaslights & Condescension. The dems will be busy breaking all their campaign promises to the left and dismissing the legitimate concerns of people who don’t have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to donate to the DNC. There might be token efforts to “save” the post office; though one has to wonder why Obama didn’t reverse the pension requiremenet when he had the chance. Hmmmm? I doubt there will be any effort to hold Trump et al accountable — “We can’t focus on the past. We must look forward and heal the divide. Blah blah blah.” And universal healthcare or free tuition? Bah! Those whining young people need to stop being so demanding, pull themselves up by their strapless boots, and make something of themselves. Just like all the senior citizens in congress did when tuition was affordable; jobs were plenty; rent wasn’t equal to your income; and when all else failed, you could declare bankruptcy and still have a chance to improve your life. Oh — and we can’t forget war. There will be lots of war. Syria? Russia? Venezuela? Bolivia? Who else has something the 1% want…? In other words, the velvet glove in place of the iron fist. A slower, more avuncular descent into irreversible income inequality and a permanent underclass. Sadly, for some, that’s good enough.

      If Trump Wins

      Scenario 4: Congress remains unchanged.
Well, we’re already here, so it’s not hard guess where this will head. Trumpenfuhrer and his handmaid Goebarrs will start their revenge tour, with Miss Nancy & her sidekick Chucky getting all twitterpated over this obvious breach of decorum. Strong words will be expressed, maybe even in writing. Hands will be wrung. Requests for donations to the DNC will increase to fund the fight for freedom. Or something like that. And of course war. Lots of it. Possibly internal as well as external, and maybe via surrogates rather than directly. But people will die. Oh yeah — and lots and lots of progressive voter shaming. BTDTGTS.

Scenario 5: Republicans take both houses of congress.
This is another short one: Similar to the above, but with feeling! Really just a continuation of the obvious trajectory we’re currently on. Probably some citizen armies; elevation of the uneducated over the “elites”; detainment and/or disappearance of activists, academics, journalists, political rivals, “dangerous” minorities; extrajudicial killings of US citizens; and so on. I think Mao’s revolution is a closer comparison than Nazi Germany, but potato/potato. 😉

Scenario 6: Democrats take both houses of congress.
So much promise. So much disappointment. Of all these, this is the only scenario that I think offers even the slightest glimmer of hope, if only because it might buy some time. Of course, it assumes a lot: IF one or both of Schumer and Pelosi are replaced, and IF we can get more progressives into congress, and IF they’d impeach Trump, and IF they’d actually undo some of the repubs worst policies, and IF they’d expand the supreme court and appoint progressive judges, our future would be vastly improved. But that’s a lot of IFs and chances are, they won’t do any of it. So in 4 years, the disappointment and lost opportunties will be even harder to ignore. In 4 years, more young people will be eligible to vote and, with luck, many of the senior quislings and seatwarmers will have aged out. Then just maybe, more left-leaning voters will be ready to support a viable third party. If not, the next election will likely return us to where we are now, but with a revitalized authoritarian regime. See Scenario 2, above, Junior Edition.

In closing, I pretty much have to conclude that the U.S. is fucked. But I remain ever-so-slightly-and-illogically hopeful that we can at least get a nice warm cuddle somewhere down the road to perdition.

Can’t argue with any of it.

Great summary, though I’ll add another scenario, no matter who wins.

Scenario 7: The Administration and Congress do nothing to substantially help the American people live through the Second Great Depression. Homelessness and hunger rise. Police brutality continues unabated. Waves of riots and various strikes hit the cities. Supply chains are disrupted. Revolution breaks out. The military refuses to fire on its own people. The government falls. A provisional government is formed. And it…

Then things go from interesting to fascinating in a hurry.

@sffh It roughly translates to Standard Whitey American English as “fellow common person.”

Look that up in the urban dictionary.  Which I did to make sure I was not mistaken.  When I first saw the “Johnson” references, I thought oh, hey now, this is interesting.  Really, look at everything with another meaning in mind.  Bwahahaha!  Sorry.

And of course now I have to have a t-shirt.  Yes I am bad.  Too late to change.

@djean111 It’s not my job to describe all the nuances of the hood and the boiler room.

Perhaps it always was.  It isn’t the party or politicians alone that need to change.  Campaign finance needs to be completely reformed, lobbying outlawed, called what it really is: bribery.  Every position needs to have term limits – we need so much more regulation in addition that…

Well, it won’t happen without blood.  Might not happen even if rivers of it flow.  The majority of those calling themselves democrats and Republicans are either unwilling or unable to face the truth.  So, destruction, disaster, poverty, war, drought, famine, pandemic, etc.

Perhaps whatever or who ever comes after us humans (as this is a global problem at this point) will have more sense.
