The Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday that Haaland was the leading candidate for the job, which would give her authority over a department that employs more than 70,000 people across the US.

The interior department also oversees more than 20 percent of the nation’s surface, including tribal lands and national parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite.

In a tweet late Thursday, Haaland said she was “honored and ready to serve”.

“A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior,” she tweeted.

      Hi sos,

      From the article:

“Growing up in my mother’s Pueblo household made me fierce. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land.”

Sounds just like AOC running for congress as a recruited Justice Democrat candidate. We have recently seen how that worked out.

This citizen no longer listens to what politicians say, only what they do. Time will tell if this Pol is any different. History would suggest suspicions here will not be challenged.

And since the Reagan administation, Democratic Interior Secretaries have ALWAYS been better than Republicans. The last decent Republican Interior Secretary was Walter Hickle, under Nixon.

          Hi afa,

Just like AOC, I have no doubt many have good intentions. History demonstrates when push comes to shove the 1% always win. The system always forces solutions in favor of the powerful. So color me skeptical of all things political, economic and the intersection of these domains.

but I also want to be optimistic. Maybe because I’m living in a country that has, ironically, a better system now thanks to the US (of 75 years ago).

          Hi sos,

I do. I live in Onondaga County New York. Many, many indigenous peoples here. Our difference is I no longer believe anyone can serve in government without the system compromising or corrupting them.

But at the same time, I want to have hope. I come from a state that made national news way back when for its almost violent opposition to the integration of a high school, and where the Democratic Party was the Party of Segregation up through the ’60s. But things began to change around in the early ’70s, and the Democratic Party in the state actually became a pretty decent party. And all my history teachers grew up in the New Deal era, and they couldn’t sing enough praises about Democrats and the New Deal. Later, one of my history teachers took some of us out of class so we could watch the Watergate hearings on TV. He couldn’t hide the smile on his face as John Dean tightened the noose around Nixon’s political neck. And then I met one of our state’s Democratic Senators, Dale Bumpers, who was, arguably, one of the best Senators the state had produced in its entire history. It’s one reason why I became a Democrat in the late ’70s. And our last Democratic governor, Mike Beebe, was a governor who actually cared about the people of the state. So I will vote for Arkansas Democrats over Arkansas Republicans any day of the week.

the man in the Senate who was most instrumental in getting New Deal legislation passed was Arkansas’ own Democratic Senator Joseph T. Robinson. So I can appreciate why my history teachers, who grew up in that era, were solidly Democratic.

              Hi afm,

“Hope is faith waiting on tomorrow.”
              – Anonymous

Hope is a delusion marketed to western consumers as a band aid for capitalism’s failures. If one only has hope enough then you can be tomorrow’s billionaire. And on and on it goes.

As a delusion, hope has become a societal cancer that keeps the body politic from focusing on reality. And that reality is simply this – the 1% own and control the 99%.

The 1% are banking on hope because they know nothing will change if the fairy tale remains alive.

I am living in a country that has gone from one of the world’s most militaristic, to one of the world’s most gentle. A society can change, although in Japan’s case it took a resounding military defeat and then the benevolence of its occupiers to make that change.

                  Hi afa,

In the US, “Hope” is marketed, sold and promulgated based on the idea of spiritual faith.  It is used as a cudgel, escape and palliative from reality.  “If we only have enough hope, then everything will be alright.”  This in the face of the relentless onslaught of corporate friendly policies and federal spending sought and gained by the Oligarchs, Corporations and Banks as they buy every politician in sight thanks to Citizens United.  It is well past time that we stop pretending that hope is anything more than an excuse to give up because it’s “all in God’s hands”.  The antidote to hope is grief and anger which drives action versus inaction.  We need to face reality as it is.  The Oligarchs, Corporations and Banks have won the war against humanity and the earth.  It is high time we direct our energies in taking back their gains for ourselves and the planet.

Sanders, Two Dozen Lawmakers Call for OAS Accountability to Ensure Fair Elections in Bolivia

      September 22, 2020
      Press Release

WASHINGTON, September 22 — In a bicameral letter sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), and Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) led two dozen members of Congress in calling on the State Department to pursue a “full, independent review” of the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding its actions last November that contributed to a major deterioration of human rights and democracy in Bolivia….

Joe Biden’s interior nominee Deb Haaland is anti-fracking, Green New Deal co-sponsor

WASHINGTON — Joe Biden’s nominee for interior secretary Rep. Deb Haaland is a Green New Deal co-sponsoring progressive who wants an immediate and outright ban on fracking in the United States.

If confirmed, Haaland would be responsible for managing all of the nation’s natural resources, including oil, gas and clean coal, and more than 500 million acres of federal and tribal lands.

She would also be in charge of making good on Biden’s promises to reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels and create more renewable energy sources.

While Biden flip-flopped on fracking during the presidential campaign — claiming he would ban it before backing it to woo blue-collar voters in states like Pennsylvania — Haaland, 60, is unequivocal….

That generations of abuse by the US government has tried to destroy…more power to her. I want her to be able to do a good job but I’ll be watching to see if her actions mesh with what she says just like everyone else here.

want them to do.  As if any appointee is going to be able to go rogue or actually enact anything contrary to the war and austerity agenda.  Pelosi consulted with the Biden team and cut the $1200 down to $600.  Harris has been totally silent.  The face of the Democratic Party is Larry Summers, ffs.

IMO, to BIDEN/VICHY DEM, this appointment is a political identity token.  Biden/Vichy Dem/Pelosi/Schumer are running things.

Everything I post is just my opinion, and, honestly, I would love to be wrong.
