Rudy Patch, until Monday night the mayor of the small town of Blackduck, Minnesota, has the dubious honor of becoming the second Minnesota city official to resign over his Facebook posts in as many weeks.
Patch says his was taken out of context.
The first was Vadnais Heights City Council member Craig Johnson, who had a cornucopia of memes targeting Muslims, queer people, and trans people all over his page until Tuesday, when he adjusted his privacy settings and abruptly stepped down.
Patch, meanwhile, undid his career with a single meme appearing on his Facebook page in the wake of protests spurred by George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. It pictured what appeared to be a blood-soaked silver Jeep and the caption, “I don’t know what you mean by protesters on the freeway; I came through no problem.”

Makes me wonder how and why they ever sought public office in the first place. Being mayor should mean a little more than just the opportunity to hate on people.

Some people mistake that for leadership.
We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.
Both major political parties are special interest groups enabling each other for power and money, at the expense of the people they no longer properly serve…

I don’t get it. Really.
Over the years, seeing a succession of public figures, organization heads ( and members ), and political office holders having to answer for saying stupid shit on social media, you’d think they’d learn. They either have to walk back what they said, be ostracized by the people around them IRL, or be fired or removed from their position in disgrace. The point is, they won’t get away with saying shit like that unscathed. Why do they keep doing it?
Seriously. It’s like a “meta” question.

@populistprole City councilpeople can be even worse(no offense, @mrmickeysmom). There was one Cleveland city councilman who kept getting caught by the cops sleeping off a drunk in his car parked in some public place. He kept getting re-elected and then was the only one to challenge Frank Jackson for his third term as mayor.
Jackson should have been easy to beat, he’s been so ineffective and corrupt. But nooooo…he cruised to re-election over that guy.
Not all that long ago we had a county commissioner go to prison for corruption and outright graft. He lived in a mansion he couldn’t possibly afford on his salary, but he had multiple alternative sources of revenue, of course. He was genuinely shocked when he got busted by the Feds.
Now we have a mayor barring all non-essential people from downtown, a county department head telling us we have to go in, and a county executive saying absolutely nothing, probably because he doesn’t know WTF to do.

Jobs programs and seemingly powerful (always temporary) positions of authority are what attracts them… that, and a jobs program for all of their stupid associates and mentally deficient and/or alcoholic children…
Hell, no... I'm not giving up...
