Jair Bolsonaro has reportedly told his health minister he will sack him if he dares criticise his handling of the coronavirus crisis.
According to a report in the Estado de São Paulo newspaper, the Brazilian president’s warning came during a top-level meeting on Saturday as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country rose to more than 3,900 and the death toll hit 114.
The health minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, reportedly informed Brazil’s far-right leader he would have no choice but to publicly criticise him if he insisted on going out in public despite warnings to stay indoors.

On Friday, the president shrugged his shoulders at the likely deaths, telling an interviewer: “Some will die. I’m sorry. That’s life.”

The blatant, arrogant evil is unimaginable. It is scary and discouraging that he can stay in power at a time like this.

Why do voters vote for these guys? And I’m including Trump voters. Yes I understand there will always be maybe 20% radically right wing probably mixed up also with a form of entitled Christianity, that will always vote for the most extremely conservative candidate. But there does not seem to be any ah ha moment while a leader like Trump or Bolsonaro rules so incompetently and greedily. Trump’s approval climbed above 50%. By now he should only have that hardline 20%, and maybe get a 10% boost if he at least tries to get on track with how serious this pandemic could be. But to retain around 40% through his whole disastrous term including his idiotic responses to this crisis, and the fact that he dismantled Obama’s pandemic response team? He gets a bump over 50%? At this rate, by November, he will be hailed as the pandemic hero. Who saved millions of American lives. You bet that is how Fox News will try and frame him.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
“There’s a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of ‘grab and greed’ are on their way out. We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. The time’s coming… when we shan’t be able to fill our bellies in comfort while others go hungry, sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold.... And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)
