Breitbart And Infowars Under Investigation For Ties To Russia: Report

Breitbart and Infowars under investigation for ties to Russia: report – McClatchy/RawStory

    <snip>

WASHINGTON — Federal investigators are examining whether far-right news sites played any role last year in a Russian cyber operation that dramatically widened the reach of news stories — some fictional — that favored Donald Trump’s presidential bid, two people familiar with the inquiry say.

Operatives for Russia appear to have strategically timed the computer commands, known as “bots,” to blitz social media with links to the pro-Trump stories at times when the billionaire businessman was on the defensive in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, these sources said.

The bots’ end products were largely millions of Twitter and Facebook posts carrying links to stories on conservative internet sites such as Breitbart News and InfoWars, as well as on the Kremlin-backed RT News and Sputnik News, the sources said. Some of the stories were false or mixed fact and fiction, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the bot attacks are part of an FBI-led investigation into a multifaceted Russian operation to influence last year’s elections.

Investigators examining the bot attacks are exploring whether the far-right news operations took any actions to assist Russia’s operatives. Their participation, however, wasn’t necessary for the bots to amplify their news through Twitter and Facebook.

The investigation of the bot-engineered traffic, which appears to be in its early stages, is being driven by the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, whose inquiries rarely result in criminal charges and whose main task has been to reconstruct the nature of the Kremlin’s cyberattack and determine ways to prevent another.

An FBI spokesman declined to comment on the inquiry into the use of bots.

    1. They still can't admit that Hillary was simply a gawdawful candidate

Always flip-flopping on issues, or co-opting popular issues from Bernie

Under investigation by the FBI during the primaries and general election

Unable to relate to the daily lives of average voters

    Severe health issues

Became a multi-millionaire by schmoozing with banksters, then refused to release transcripts of half-hour quarter-million-dollar speeches to them

Obvious DNC favoritism toward Hillary in the primary

Quintessential establishment candidate during an anti-establishment election year

The last time America was run like a business, we ended up with a Great Depression.

        12. Yeah, how could I forget that?

Saber-rattling towards Russia, among other things, was incredibly stupid.

    4. That would make those rags better sourced than I thought.

Also note the qualifier “some” were false, and that implies.  That, of course, could be said about the WaPo and NYT, as well.  A final thought, why is the only influence and disinformation program that concerns the Hillbots and the spooks is Russia’s?  When I last checked, AIPAC was still in operation rivalled increasingly by Saudi spending on PR in Washington.

    8. Links between the far-right media and the "Kremlin-backed" media?

    Quelle surprise!

One of the weird aspects of modern international politics is that far-right media, political parties and politicians seem to be in sync with the Russian establishment, while they do not seem to have the same attitude towards China’s establishment.

FDR stood for high/progressive taxes, tight regulation of corporations, effective legislation to support strong unions, a strong safety net, fiscal policy that supports full employment rather than austerity, engagement with the rest of the world in terms of trade and diplomacy and the Four Freedoms. Bernie supports the same issues plus an understanding of the danger posed by climate change. Count me as an FDR/Bernie liberal.
