Enforcement of statewide mask mandates is increasingly falling on retail and restaurant workers as local police departments take a hands-off approach to compliance.

A growing number of states and cities have imposed mask orders to slow the spread of COVID-19 as a second surge of coronavirus cases risks another round of lockdowns. But a wave of clashes between employees and customers has left business groups pleading with state officials to step in and ease the burden on vulnerable workers.

“Public health officials and local governments are in the best position to enforce these requirements,” said Jason Straczewski, vice president for government relations and political affairs at the National Retail Federation.

“It is unfair and, we feel, not appropriate to ask retail workers, grocery store workers, and restaurant workers to have to enforce these requirements,” he continued, adding that retailers are happy to provide “plenty of signage” and “friendly reminders” about masks.

Imagine making $9.10 and hour in a grocery store, and being required to ask some aggro batshit crazy Trump supporting spitter to please put a mask on before entering the store.

Where I live, the grocery stores in the towns that have ordinances requiring patrons to wear masks in commercial establishments have given up on trying to enforce the mask requirements, because of all the ignorant, violent Trump supporters, and clueless others who see the Trump worshipers not wearing masks, so they figure they don’t have to wear masks either.

It’s way past time to start getting serious about fining and jailing the ignorant, destructive assholes who are making others sick, destroying our economy, and causing millions of workers to lose their jobs, all because of their great love for Trump and/or their juvenile delinquent rebel without a clue mentality.

Unfortunately, most of the cops in the US are Trump worshipers, and have juvenile delinquent rebel without a clue mentalities too, so they will refuse to enforce mask laws, and the widespread economic, physical, and emotional coronavirus beatings will continue until morale approves.

We have a few of those people here, but our very conservative premiere is thankfully not behind them. Flat out called them selfish and yahoos. Still, we’ve been seeing a surprising number of maskless or half-masked people at the stores lately. Nowhere near the majority, but a noticeable number. And of course, we handle it in a typically Canadian manner: Mutter to ourselves in passively-aggressive audible tones, make eye contact with other mask-wearing folk who are similarly disturbed, and then complain to the manager.

It happened at Lowe’s yesterday — a doughy white couple being particularly egregious about flouting the mask requirement — and by the time we went to complain, the manager said, “Yes, yes, I know. I’m taking care of it now.” He then made a public announcement that anyone refusing to wear a mask will be asked to leave the store, and if they did not, the police would be called.

In Toronto, at least, we now have an enforceable by-law with a maximum $1000 fine. But as in your situation, the enforcement is largely falling on the shoulders of front-line workers. Still, what I see more than anything is stores having a person at the door telling people they need a mask — and in some cases, offering one — and the occasional person grumbling, sometimes getting angry, and then storming off when they realize the crowd isn’t behind them. Thank goodness we still have some minimum level of sanity here. It definitely helps that we don’t have the anxiety over medical bills and — probably even more importantly — that our federal and local governments have provided financial support for those who can’t work right now.

I watched one clown frog-marched out of the store by them after he took his mask off in the store and refused to put it back on.

In Cuyahoga County the large majority of people I’ve seen out and about are wearing either masks or shields. We were going to take a road trip this week and I could have reported on the rural areas, but we decided not to.

Not out of fear of a virus we’ve had and don’t fear contracting again, but because it’s impossible to make plans to just go out and have fun, which is the whole purpose of a road trip. Maybe I’ll spend some of the savings on a firearm or crossbow or something.

bought firearms in case they need to defend the family from wacko, aggressive, and potentially violent Trump supporters.  My niece has been threatened for wearing a mask in a grocery store.

They live on the suburban Gulf Coast of Florida, and my niece says they spend a lot of time practicing at the local firing range.

I wear one, carry disposable gloves, use alcohol on my hands, keys and whatever I need to yet I go into a business here and I kid you not, it is that bad. Was getting out of my car the other day and an elderly (more elderly than me) man walked up to me a yelled “whaddaya think it is halloween or somethin?????” I am basically frightened when I leave the house now. The only comfort I get are the few that are masked and our eyes meeting tell a lot. We nod or make a hand gesture. I thank the rare few that are maskless, that once in awhile apologize for getting too close.

I can gauge votes by just looking now.
