      What do you know about cloud based discussion boards versus server based ones like JPR. Please compare and contrast and I’ll look up anything you tell me to. This is important.

      Thanks! 🤓

        I keep rocking out to some of it, or “gee whiz”… Well, we can’t know everything. That’s why many hands make less work (my grandma would say).

      Here is a parallel, it is the difference between renting (Cloud Base) and owning (Server) a home. If the landlord does not like you for whatever reason, you are as good as gone. Just ask Wikileaks and Amazon.

      There is more work with having your own server. The expense of maintenance, such replacing hardware and software as needed, not to mention updates and other system needs. Not mention, having a server needs a fast up and down speeds.

      In cloud base, you hopefully have professionals who know what to do when a problem. That is not a 100% guaranty. At this time, Moon of Alabama is unable to post because his cloud base service is having a problem.

      There is give and take for both platforms. My belief is one has more leeway with content with a server system. A cloud base system is less work and cheaper in the long run. When making a decision, a cost benefit analysis what fits needs of the project.

        It clicked better in my head.

        I guess a cloud base system could be a temporary bridge to obtaining the hardware/software/server upkeep in running your own server (if the resources were pooled, meanwhile)

      But if you all installed Steam we could be friends on that and chat about killing Nazis in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

      Clouds and servers both run on real hardware.

      You can use a cloud service, which has many systems on servers, or you can use a server hosting service, which probably has fewer servers.

      You can own your own too, which is a server you manage.

      @mrdmk
      summarizes a few issues nicely, but the reality is that servers fail now and then – it’s a question of how good is your backup and failover solutions, and how much you want to manage.

        Both use satellites. One just runs a cable from your own dish to your TV, the other runs miles of cable from their dish to your TV. If your own dish goes out, you have to fix it, but if cable screws up, it’s up to the CATV company to fix it.

        Thanks for that. It makes sense to me now.

          The last time I taught a course I used a cloud system – easier than setting up and maintaining the system in the department lab.

            I’m looking now. There’s a wide range of pricing, and as of today I know nothing about the host cloud server companies.

        @eridani

        Normally, you would have to post so many posts as a newly subscribed member and I can’t even recall whether it is after 50 posts as a newbie, or more or less, when as of THAT TIME, you’d be officially able to OP!

        Without a Wizard admin, I ain’t-a-gonna know, but let’s do an experiment and keep posting in a thread to see if my theory, even though you aren’t a newbie, “kicks in”. That’s the only logical way I can think to test the theory, know what I mean?
