On Wednesday morning, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders unveiled six Unity Task Forces and dozens of members who will sit on the panels, which will each tackle a different issue: climate, criminal justice reform, the economy, education, health care, and immigration. As Bloomberg reports, each task force will have eight members—evenly divided between Biden and Sanders appointees—and will meet before the Democratic National Convention in August to make recommendations to the platform committee and to Biden. Among the most notable names of the dozens announced is New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who, along with former Secretary of State John Kerry, will lead the climate task force.

The policy groups, which Biden and Sanders announced their intent to form when the latter dropped out of the Democratic primary, will address concerns on the left for Biden, ideally making skeptical Democrats more open to voting for the party’s presumptive nominee. As my colleague Abigail Tracy reported last month after Sanders endorsed Biden, progressives have expressed concern that “Biden’s early entreaties to the movement won’t result in real change.” Ocasio-Cortez herself highlighted “two patterns that I saw among Biden’s campaign, which is underperformance among Latinos and young people, both of which are very important demographics in November.”

Of particular concern to those on the left is the gap between Sanders and Biden on health care, especially as the coronavirus continues to cripple the country, knocking an estimated 27 million people off their health-insurance plans. Speaking to Tracy, a senior progressive Hill staffer accused party moderates of having “zero recognition” of “the current relationship between employer-based health care and the way that this could be stripped from you immediately.” There’s a fear, according to the staffer, that Biden might enter “a similar phase as the Clinton campaign where you’re simply making an oppositional push against Trump and his leadership style, without providing that kind of an affirmative alternative that will actually motivate a particular demographic that is oftentimes uninterested in engaging.” The health care panel, which will attempt to bridge those differences, will be co-chaired by Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus who helped campaign for Sanders around the country and Vivek Murthy, the former Surgeon General who has been advising Biden’s coronavirus response.

Notice the focus isn’t on coming up with a great climate (or healthcare) plan, the focus is on duping voters.

In fact, any fucking thing with “unity” in its name enrages me.  Take that word out back and fucking shoot it – another word/concept the Democratic Party has corrupted and twisted, like #metoo and “liberal”.

Yes, this is ALL just for the purposes of campaign pandering.  Biden ALREADY FUCKING SAID he would veto M4A if it got to his desk.  Biden doesn’t remember what he says from day to day, but we do remember, DNC/Democratic Party fuckwads. Biden said things would stay the same shitty course.  I believe him.

Task forces that will make recommendations to the platform committee at the convention. Sounds utterly toothless. Bernie was able to add some progressive sentences to the party platform in 2016 and it didn’t alter a thing. Rinse and repeat.
AOC may swing a few people, but more importantly, she has abandoned legit criticisms of the  party. She joined the fold and will now defend that which she rose to fame criticizing. She is now playing the good cop toward the left.
If she keeps this up she too can have a Howard Dean- like plum lobbyist position waiting for her.

I think most of those who would rather vote for something they don’t want and get it over voting for something they do want and not getting it are already voting for Biden. I simply will not vote for someone with whom I completely disagree on the issues most important to me, and no amount of vote-shaming by neoliberals or grotesque pandering by careerist progressive Democrats will change my mind.

That’s what she’s there for. Bernie and AOC sure are making people out there denying they’re sheep dogs look ridiculous.

She will have little or no impact.

Anyone among the Left who votes for Biden will only do so because they feel they must remove Trump from power by any and every means necessary, not because of anything that AOC says, or does.

I am sick and tired of “leftists” selling out and siding with the DNC when the going gets rough. That’s not how you effect change. Selling out is not an option, but I’m a child of the sixties. We believed in fighting the good fight. I hope for some of us, that is still true.

The “left” is already voting against Trump.   The few who won’t vote to oust him will have no impact.

@bazukhov If Biden is the nominee, Democratic turnout will be suppressed because millions of people simply won’t bother to vote. That’s how Trump got elected in the first place, when enough people who normally vote Democratic left the presidential line blank because they couldn’t stomach Hillary.

I think Biden is actually campaigning in the best way possible for him, by remaining out of the public eye as much as possible. Once again, he’s the default candidate, and maybe, just maybe, enough older voters in the right states will vote for him so he can win the election. Younger voters are not going to turn out for him. If I ran his campaign, I wouldn’t even let him debate Trump, because Trump will massacre that senile old man in a debate.

I think that there were far more voters that sat out the election thinking Hillary had it in the bag than voted 3rd party in 2016.   I thought she had it and voted for Stein knowing it would have no effect.  Hillary won easily in my state.   And, she won the popular vote by millions.   I certainly don’t think the voters believe that Biden has it in the bag and will turn out in enough numbers to flip the swing states she lost by minimal votes.

I don’t like Biden, think he’s a weak candidate, and he should follow your advice.   But, in the face of Trump for 4 more years, I will hold my nose and vote for him as will most of “the left”.   He will easily win in my state so my vote will have no effect but to cast a vote in utter contempt of Trump and his idiot followers.

In a debate with Don all he has to do is look gentlemanly, sane, and mention a few things about student debt, the environment, abortion rights, unemployment and Donnie’s record on them.   Then let Donnie do the rest with his usual idiocy and self promoting.  He need only roll his eyes and shake his head while Don brags about his “achievements”.

As for young voters, I think enough of them will turn out and learn that nose-holding has far more effect than righteous indignation and pouting.

@bazukhov I also think they’re correct in thinking that. I know you don’t, but we’ll just have to disagree on that one.

I doubt it.  I didn’t vote for her but as bad as she was, she still managed to win the popular vote by millions.   I think that Biden will end up winning even more than she did in popular votes.

I voted blue no matter who every election before this one unlike the blue no matter who posters here say they voted third party in the past. Joe Biden is the worst candidate the Democrats ever offered me. I remember my mom beating deadlines to file bankruptcy and there were long lines and this was a Biden policy. I remember him well.

@bazukhov – many of us sincerely doubt that those “millions of votes” for Hillary were legitimate.  Reasoning posted elsewhere here at JPR.  Anyway, if Biden is such a sure thing, I am hoping the “vote for the blue no matter how disgusting or against everything you believe in” folks can take a break!

Maybe AOC thinks she knows what she is doing. Let’s just say she KNOWS we are not going to end up falling in line for Biden. Let’s just say she knows the task forces are a total joke.  Perhaps she is going along, just so that she can say she tried to work with them.  And after Biden refuses to include Bernie’s positions and squelches them, and loses.  Maybe AOC is setting things up for the BIG “WE TOLD YOU SO!”

I’m probably dreaming, but it helps get through the discouragement and sense of abandonment right now.

If AOC and Bernie are supposed to be “sheepdogs” they are not effective. Nobody can convince us that Biden isn’t a POS with dementia.

EVER. I will vote Green and totally expect my vote to “disappear” just like so many Green votes 4 years ago. Fuck the DNC. They don’t care. They will raise lots of money from the sheeple using “OMG Trump!!” letters and emails for another 4 years.

and will it garner them one more vote than they got in 2016? back then people were much more afraid of what he’d bring–beatings in the streets, Congress shuttered, a rain of MIRVs
