Fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a face mask or stay 6 feet away from others in most settings, whether outdoors or indoors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in updated public health guidance released Thursday.

There are a handful of instances where people will still need to wear masks — in a health-care setting, at a business that requires them or on an airplane — even if they’ve had their final vaccine dose two or more weeks ago, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told reporters at a press briefing.

“Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing,” Walensky said. “If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic. We have all longed for this moment, when we can get back to some sense of normalcy.”

Walensky said unvaccinated people should still continue to wear masks, adding they remain at risk of mild or severe illness and risk spread the disease to others.

I’ll have my second Moderna shot by then, and I already had the bloody Covid, so I’m quite ready to ditch the mask.

And make sure the whole world can “get back to some sense of normalcy.”  Whether or not Pfizer makes a profit on it?

I wonder how long it will be until state orders change, though . . . I can get arrested (I think) in Oregon if I don’t wear a mask in public.

And, of course, it will also mean that non-vaccinated people will stop wearing masks as there’s no way to show you are vaccinated – the CDC cards don’t have any legal standing. Names are hand-written on them – or at least, mine is . . .

And there are no plans that I know of to be able to show that you are vaccinated.

If they think it politically advantageous to keep the mask requirements, I’m sure they will. I would think Democrat governors would tend to keep the masks to pander to their own base, just as many Republican ones lifted the requirements to pander to theirs.

IOW, in few cases will the actual health needs of the things be a factor in the decisionmaking process.

Apparently the Q-Anus conspiracy types are now advocating mask wearing. NOT to prevent spread of the virus, but apparently because they think that whatever fictional Bill Gates Windows 10 powered alien nanobots are supposedly in the vaccine can be somehow airborne themselves….

…so you could potentially end up with a situation where all the vaccinated people are walking around this summer breathing in unfiltered air, while the idiots who have been happy super-spreading the virus for the last year are now masking themselves….for completely ridiculous reasons.

I can see it now: By the Fourth of July you will be able to spot Q-Anon type Republicans and weird religious cultists because they will be the only ones wearing masks!

          What a country.

So I guess that makes it “official”.

Now whether it proves to be scientifically accurate or not…. I guess we will find out in a month or so.  Just in case this proves to be the wrong move…. it’s days like this I find myself fortunate to be immortal and thus not all that worried about the outcome either way…. at least not for myself.

An article on CNN says that 7 New York Yankees team members tested positive.  All vaccinated with J & J – but also only one of them is currently showing symptoms.

I imagine there has been a lot of pressure on the CDC to make an announcement like this.

I read that 50% of eligible people here in Maine have been vaccinated.  While that is good if the efficacy ratings hold… that still leaves the other 50%.

Yeah.  It is too soon for this move.

We will see how things unfold – but I expect quite a surge in the weeks ahead.

Why does anybody believe anything they say at this point? They’ve already admitted that some vaccinated people still got infected so what’s changed?

or they’re going WTF – what now?

And I wonder how many people will go maskless now that the CDC says it’s OK.

      @jbnw

Part of the problem is, there really isn’t any kind of requirement (as far as I know) to prove you have been vaccinated.  I got a paper card… but those are also easy to forge.  I’m sure plenty of people lost or didn’t bother keeping theirs, too.

It really is too soon for this – and to announce it in this manner… well, I think it is a bad idea.  More time is needed.  As far as vaccination records go.. there should be a way at least for employers and schools and the like to check.  I do not know if there is yet.

This seems like a half assed, rushed plan to get back to “normal” again.

Even if I were vaccinated, probably wouldn’t be thinking our leaders are in their right minds.
There are too many unanswered questions. Official numbers of new cases in this region are down to something akin to maybe a year ago, and I’m sure a lot of the medical establishment’s input is based on models with vaccination as a very major input. And those models would show continued decrease in infection rate but: They probably assume a still-increasing rate in number of people vaccinated. And the makers of these epidemiological models have had enough of talk about the Indian variants, breakthrough infection, any of that. And probably the models didn’t predict, for one thing, the number of people who had their first shot and have declined the second. Yes, this is a half-vaccinated nation though that isn’t quite the adjective I usually use.
Here in the USA, they are hitting the wall, probably, of people eager to get vaxed. Ie. they are hitting the hesitancy wall, and it is at a lower percentage than Fauci and company were assuming or wanting.
Therefore, I suspect they are now including in the models, encouragement through fear: Hey ya non-vaxers (is their approach), you do want to go out amongst the breathers don’t you, and be invincible. And also not be the freak wearing the mask. So that should drive up the percentages a little. Meanwhile lots of unanswered questions about the vaxes and the disease. I’m not ready to embrace either one.

The assumption there is that, even though something like 30% of the people in this region are truly fully vaccinated, you won’t see people indoors in any public place anymore wearing masks, effective, probably today. 30% actually vaccinated, funny how 0% (except me) in this store, car mechanic shop, etc. are masked.

It is given in the early stages of the COVID-19 infection. That is like taking Tamiflu medicine in the early stages of the seasonal Flus-A & B.

Personally, I would get some testing kits, a new thermometer and test myself every five days.

Two days earlier Kate Brown, Oregon’s governor, had announced that restrictions would be reduced when 70% of the state was vaccinated. Now it’s put in the hands of businesses to make their own decision as to what is required.

I think everyone was surprised by the announcement – and now there is no standard. I will see what, if anything, changes at businesses.
