BEIJING (Reuters) – China and the United States have agreed to cancel in phases the tariffs imposed during their months-long trade war, the Chinese commerce ministry said on Thursday, without specifying a timetable.

An interim U.S.-China trade deal is widely expected to include a U.S. pledge to scrap tariffs scheduled for Dec. 15 on about $156 billion worth of Chinese imports, including cell phones, laptop computers and toys.

Tariff cancellation was an important condition for any agreement, ministry spokesman Gao Feng said, adding that both must simultaneously cancel some tariffs on each other’s goods to reach a “phase one” trade deal.

“The trade war started with tariffs, and should end with the cancellation of tariffs,” Gao told a regular news briefing.

A while back I was thinking that if there were any method to his madness, Trump would start winding down the trade war at some point in 2020. That’s sure to provide a temporary boost in business confidence, positively influence the markets, and allow this smoke and mirrors economy to limp along for another year, looking just good enough on paper to help him get reelected.

Although, he’d be betting on market optimism trumping (heh) the fact that wages never went up, that Michigan et al. never got their 21st century manufacturing utopia, or that what he has going on here is somehow something other than a continuation of the Obama economy.

@gamemeat Yah, that’s almost certainly it. Trump trying to prop up the smoke-and-mirrors financial sector so it doesn’t crash before next November.

I’m confident that the Imbecile will call it one of his biglyest, magnificent, unforgettable, deals of our lifetimes.

Kind of like The Wall, the purchase of Greenland, and the kinda, sorta, withdrawal from Syria.
