I saw the original, and found Chomsky pompous and condescending. My great mind has decided this; who are you to question me?

At least, that’s how he came across to me. That comment he made that a vote for a third party or a nonvote was in effect a vote for Trump is just absurd. I respect Chomsky a lot, but he’s just wrong on this issue.

is the David Graeber argument beginning about the 5:40 mark…. Insidious = proceeding in a gradual, subtle way but with harmful effects; Essentially, there is an insidious symbiosis between the centrist elitists and the scam artist -pretend fascists that are the only two viable political choices but they feed off of and complement one another.

I also agree David Graeber’s comment is the thesis statement of the whole corrupt mess of the DNC/Third-Way.

Just thinking about graeber the other night.  What a loss; he was one of the few people on the scene saying anything interesting at all, and unlike most academics, he put his money where his mouth was in a big way.  RIP again David.

Jimmy pointed out that Chomsky was great on analysis but just dead wrong on the solution. In that respect, Chomsky has a lot in common with Karl Marx, whose analysis of capitalism is still accurate and unsurpassed, but his solutions were vague.

In another respect, vagueness has its advantages. Chomsky isn’t vague at all in going back on his own past advice on how one should vote, and preaching that a vote for anyone but Biden is a vote against the future of the planet, when a vote for either Biden or Trump is in fact a vote for continued consumption of the biosphere by capitalism.

Somehow, I don’t see Karl Marx ever telling us to vote for either one of those maniacal clowns.

The interviews with O’Donnell and Greider are from An Unreasonable Man, a documentary about Ralph Nader.

@eridani And there is always a fifth choice–not to participate in or give legitimacy to a corrupt electoral system at all.

Refusing to vote for the terrible choices offered to us by our rulers is not insane. What is insane is voting for the lesser evil again and again and expecting things to somehow get better, when Americans have been doing that for 40 years and things have consistently gotten worse.

I think Chomsky’s argument here is nuts.

I own the documentary on an old fashioned DVD and have watched it many times.
