The hijackers who carried out the attacks on 9/11, like all radical jihadist groups in the Middle East, spoke to the U.S. in the murderous language it taught them.

I was in Times Square in New York City shortly after the second plane banked and plowed into the South Tower. The crowd looking up at the Jumbotron gasped in dismay at the billowing black smoke and the fireball that erupted from the tower.

There was no question now that the two attacks on the twin towers were acts of terrorism. The earlier supposition, that perhaps the pilot had a heart attack or lost control of the plane when it struck the North Tower seventeen minutes earlier, vanished with the second attack.

The city fell into a collective state of shock. Fear palpitated throughout the streets. Would they strike again? Where? Was my family safe? Should I go to work? Should I go home? What did it mean? Who would do this? Why?

The explosions and collapse of the towers, however, were, to me, intimately familiar. I had seen it before. This was the familiar language of empire.  I had watched these incendiary messages dropped on southern Kuwait and Iraq during the first Persian Gulf War and descend with thundering concussions in Gaza and Bosnia. The calling card of empire, as was true in Vietnam, is tons of lethal ordnance dropped from the sky.

Thanks Chris. Of course there was no discussion of how our foreign policy led to this in any of the mainstream coverage for the 20th anniversary.

that bombing, creating revolutions, and putting sanctions in place to destroy economies in other countries doesn’t endear that country to us.

Do you remember the Soviet Union at the end of the (first) Cold War? They want our blue jeans, our music and our lifestyle, and looked on the US positively.

We DESTROYED that positive attitude with sanctions and the new cold war.

Russia could have been a real ally, and I wonder what the world could have been if that had happened.

Thanks, Obama (yes, he seized Russian diplomatic property and expelled diplomats – the start of the consulate and embassy closures in the US and Russia).

when I saw the towers come down . . . it wasn’t for the victims. My first thought was that, somehow, it would turn out our own government created the 9/11 as a false flag attack and as an excuse to go to war.

I tried telling that to a few people and was sharply ridiculed. How right I was.

Many people were questioning the governments version. The psychics didn’t fit the government’s narrative then and doesn’t now.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.

@utopianleftist,was for someone dear to me who lived far away,I wondered how he’d take the news.I later found out.He was watching on TV and called the news out to his sons and said there would be war.

My second thought, like your first one and the thought of the one dear to me,was that there would be war because it was plain to me that George had been bucking for a war with somebody, anybody, for a long time.
