Comey confirms FBI investigating Russia, Trump ties

(CNN)FBI Chief James Comey said publicly for the first time Monday that his agency is investigating alleged links between Russia and the Trump campaign and whether any crimes may have been committed during last year’s election campaign.
“That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts,” Comey said in his opening statement to a dramatic hearing before the House Intelligence Committee.
But Comey said that while an investigation was going on he would be unable to give few details about its progress or whether anyone in particular was being targeted.

The hearing, which also features testimony from National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers, could also shed light on the state of FBI investigations into the extent of Russian meddling in the election campaign. Republicans hope Comey will state that there is no evidence of collusion between Trump aides and officials from Moscow, a move that could begin to break up a cloud of Russian intrigue that has stifled the early weeks of the administration. But Democrats say there is circumstantial evidence of wrongdoing that needs to be probed.

    1. So he's confirming what everyone knew already

Nothing exactly blockbuster newsworthy there, James.

      2. Yep that's it pretty much it so far.

Schiff to Comey about Stone…Comey says, I am not going to talk about any particular person today.

Upon further questions Comey repeats the same response.

      3. And that is all he did.

He is mostly refusing to answer anything.

      10. There haven't even been specific allegations of criminal behavior by the WH here

That’s the news from today.  As CNN summarized it later in the afternoon,  the only ones today who raised allegations of specific crimes are the Republicans.
Excerpt of latest summary from CNN with bottom-line quote of the day (from a surprising source): http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/20/politics/comey-hearing-russia-wiretapping/

Republicans say that the leaking of his name was a criminal act in contravention of laws that mask the identify of US citizens caught up in surveillance operations targeting foreign nationals.
Comey would not talk Monday about specific cases or confirm newspaper reports, but said that leaks about classified activity were “terrible.”
South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy read out the names of Obama administration officials, including former national security adviser Susan Rice and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, asking whether they would have had access to the name of a unmasked person. Comey said that their positions would likely allow them such information but did not comment on the individual cases.
“The felonious dissemination of classified material most definitely is a crime,” Gowdy warned.
The top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Adam Schiff, said it was not yet known whether the Russian operation was aided by US citizens, “including people associated with the Trump campaign.”

“Many of Trump’s campaign personnel, including the President himself, have ties to Russia and Russian interests. This is, of course, no crime,” Schiff said.

      7. Jim Himes is my congressman, he sounds like an asshole up there but

not alone. Comey will not answer so the Dems are laying it on thick with questions….some of which they should be embarrassed.

What I’m hearing is, do you believe Mr Comey that Putin is not a fan of NATO? lol

From the cons, why do you believe Putin preferred Trump ( suggesting its not true ) and not Clinton…this was a funny twisted pretzel and Comey made me laugh.

It is widely known Putin did, but SO WHAT?

      Are you watching it too?

      11. No, only long enough to impeach drump

I don’t trust Comey.  “He kept repeating, no comment”.

He was not shy when he brought up Hillary shortly before the election.

He was blabbing like a speed freak.

        12. Comey had to do that because the public knew that they had

the new Weiner e-mails. Until then he had protected HRH by claiming

to the committee that there was no intent from her side to be that

sloppy with the server/e-mails. One section of the espionage law did

not mention intent at all; thus this was purely his opinion. As a

prosecutor he had not the right to  interpret the law. With this he

        helped HRH.

Now, again, he is helping the Dems by just stringing their only

issue along, and keeping it in the limelight, instead of letting

it die a natural death. Funny, how all of a sudden the Dems are

pushing for a Cold War#2. If nothing is found after another year

how will they justify their insistence on that??

I detest smear campaigns no matter who does them.

          13. the dems are pushing for cold war II?

          Nyet, they’re not.

          To trust putin is naive.

I refuse to bend over in front of him.

Putin was a  diabolic ex kgb agent.

his agenda is, divide and conquer.

          Same as it ever was.

Putin is 10 times smarter than drump, but then, who isn’t?

    6. What I saw this morning was…

    essentially three threads of pursuit.

    1. The pursuit of leaks by Republicans on the committee.
    2. The pursuit of collusion between the Trump Campaign and Russia (with a side of simply Russian hacking on their own)
    3. Putting to rest the Obama wiretap claims, both Domestic and Foreign (with a side of reassurance to our allies)

I think the major headlines today are:

No such wiretap ordered, either foreign or domestic. This should be case closed and Trump should apologize to Britain and Obama.  Is this going to happen? No way in Hell.

The FBI is indeed investigating Russia/Trump collusion/involvements/entanglements.  I seriously doubt we will get ANY open hearing details about this as it is ongoing and neither Comey or Rogers will be able to publicly say anything right now.

I do not think the first pursuit will go very far for this reason; if Comey/Rogers know who leaked they would be arrested and prosecuted. The first pursuit is much more about controlling the narrative than anything else even though the points are relevant I just don’t see anything coming out of this committee investigation over it other than reassurances.

      8. Number 3 being the only productive aspect thus far..imo.

      Agree with your assessment…very good.
