“Trump just launched his 2020 re-election campaign with, essentially, the same speech he used at Trump Tower in 2015, when he first ranted about Mexican rapists and murderers. And the media paid for it,” wrote progressive radio host Thom Hartmann, capping off his tweet with the hashtag #Suckers.

As some critics accused the corporate networks of getting “played” by Trump into airing the primetime speech—particularly after they refused to carry a 2014 immigration address by former President Barack Obama—Vox’s Matt Yglesias argued that media executives are not being duped at all.

Rather, Yglesias wrote on Twitter, they are acting in a way that advances their material self-interest by pursuing whatever is best for ratings.

“The view that rich powerful media executives continually get ‘played’ like this seems to me to be a seriously weak analysis of the situation. They derive concrete material benefits from Republican Party election wins,” Yglesias noted.

      https://www.commondreams.org/views/2019/01/09/look-trumps-biggest-border-lies

Lie 1: Border crossings are at or near an all-time high.
Lie 2: Terrorists are entering the country through the southern border, creating a national security crisis.
Lie 3: The wall would stop gang members.
Lie 4: The wall would stop drugs from pouring in through the border.

Lie 5: We need a new wall. There are over 650 miles of existing border barriers. A report by the Government Accountability Office found that Trump’s ill-conceived wall plan would waste billions of dollars and might “cost more than projected, take longer than planned, or not fully perform as expected.”

The Trump team know that there is enough doubt and mistrust of the media that they can put out their own “alternative facts”, as top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway put it, and many people will believe them over journalists. This is a postmodern view of facts — that there is no objective truth, but many ‘truths’. It’s a question of who the audience trusts more.

"Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect." JG

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not solved with more nationalism.

Before 1980 the government lied when it believed it was necessary. Everyone knew it when it happened, but everyone trusted the government to be moderate about it.

Then Reagan came along. Reagan lied about everything, and when he was called on it he doubled down, aggressively repeating his lie. Even when the truth would have been better for his position he lied. This helped him keep his story straight.

W tried to follow the Reagan strategy, but didn’t have the discipline to keep it up or the intelligence to keep his lies straight.

Obama lied, then he threw his lies in our face and laughed at us.

Now Trump. Lie about everything, but never say the same lie twice. Truth is buried under a pile of rubble.

It’s not a dystopian novel, it’s a natural political progression. The next stop is a violent collapse.
