Happy Winter Solstice! It’s a day celebrated around the world in many traditions. In Iran, last night, the longest night of the year, was Yalda’ Night. Iranians gather indoors in places full of light, feast, undoubtedly drink alcohol in whatever quantities are available, and enjoy each other’s company throughout the night if possible, though there’s no shame in falling asleep.
What religion started Yalda’ Night in Iran?
Looking up the answer is cheating.
Answer: Zoroastrianism. The hamsters do not let me reply, even on Oracle. I hope the edit works. Anyway, 2 winners, NV Wino and Hasslecat. I can post pictures now, but not replies, so I can’t award prizes tonight.

the darkness. It’s kind of like our Halloween and Winter Solstice rolled into one. And it looks like they’re having a good time:

fruits of summer (red fruits especially e.g. watermelon and pomegranate), and fortune-telling using the ghazals of the poet hafez. Evidentally you make a wish and open a collection of hafez’ ghazals, then interpret your wish in light of the poem:
As I mentioned, during this night people also read Hafez poetry. You probably wonder why Hafez? Iranians believe in Hafez as much as believing in God. People make a wish, open a book of Hafez and the first poem they see is the interpretation of the wish and whether and how it will come true.
So in Yalda night each member of the family makes a wish and randomly opens the book and asks the eldest member of the family to read it aloud.
