          13. I read a book about Arnold Rothstein who was murdered before Las Vegas hit

the big time and it named many people he helped get a foothold in organized crime. Meyer Lansky was one and AR transformed him from a street killer into a criminal financial mastermind much like AR himself.

There were a couple of cities where the mob was Jewish & the rest was the Sicilian Mafia. (I also grew up not far from Little Italy and friends who lived there all had stories of mob actions all relayed under omerta natch.)

The name Bugsy Siegle was well known – Joesph Bonnano would have been my last guess.

              23. I come from a baseball family and Arnold Rothstein provided the $$$ to fix

the 1919 World Series. I was interested and the bio on him was much more interesting than I thought it would be and can recommend it – it’s cheap used on Amazon. AR was the one who started international drug smuggling which sprang from his being a successful rum runner during the early days of Prohisition.

AR would fix horse races and would sometimes wager a 6 figure sum on one race placing bets all over the country to avoid suspicion and lower the odds. His father was an Orthodox Jew and very well regarded in that community as served as an arbiter of disputes.

I was surprised about the book – it was way more informative than just baseball. (In 1919 when a long distance phone call was both rare & expensive, AR paid to have a private phone line direct from New York to Chicago to keep tabs on his agents and investment.)

      30. I'm going to be contrary here. Please don't hate me.

I thought I remembered reading that the Flamingo name thing was an urban legend.  Maybe.  Some sources claim the name was given to the casino project by its initial founder, a man named Wilkerson.  But there are a couple good reasons to believe the Flamingo name was Siegel’s idea.  His girlfriend had long, thin legs, although it’s unclear whether or not she had the nickname “Flamingo.”  And Siegel liked the birds themselves, and considered them lucky.

Anyway, Siegel was called Bugsy because he was quick to act, sometimes impulsively, giving the impression he was crazy, or “buggy.”  In his early years, Siegel evidently enjoyed being considered crazy, and referred to himself as Bugs or Bugsy.  Later, only close friends and associates were allowed to use the nickname, and he was “Mr. Siegel” to most people.

Edit: On further checking, I found a claim that Virginia Hill, Siegel’s girlfriend. did not have long, thin legs. In fact, she was rather short and a little toward the stout side.
