On Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 a.m., most clocks in North America will fall back by one hour.

But increasingly, many people in the US want to be done with this clock-changing ritual for good.

Daylight-saving time (DST) was first implemented during World War I as a way to cut energy use. Not waking up in the dark, the thinking went, would decrease fuel use for lighting and heating, and this would help conserve energy supplies for the war effort.

The US established daylight-saving time in 1918 through the Calder Act (also known as the Standard Time Act), which also created standard time zones in the US. After WWI ended, it was left up to states to choose whether to continue it.

I HATE IT! PLEASE STOP IT!!!

Turn the clocks back and keep them that way!  It’s the same 24 hours in a day no matter what.  Life has moved on since 1918, hasn’t it?  E.g., who wears spats anymore?     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spats_(footwear)

EDIT:  When I was in elementary school and Daylight Savings Time came around, I thought that turning the clocks ahead meant I’d get out of school an hour earlier.   I didn’t understand why I was still stuck in the classroom till 3:00 p.m. as if nothing had changed.

I feel much better since I gave up hope.

LEAVE THE CLOCKS ON STANDARD TIME THE YEAR AROUND!!!1!! There is no real, or clear advantage of switching the clocks twice a year.

We don’t need more vehicle accidents or deadly heart attacks, regardless of what the late afternoon, back yard party animals want.
I used to have to get up at 5:00 AM, which meant I had to go to bed when the sun was still shining.

Florida, Tennessee, and Washington state have voted overwhelmingly to scrap it, but the US Congress refuses to give permission.

some states/regions don’t do dst, already.  so why does congress need to approve?

Congress would have to change the law to allow them to switch.

The Russians are ahead of us. Medvedev or whatever his name was that was president between Putin’s terms abolished the time change in Russia. I remember he said it was too hard on the cows, and him as well. I agree.

We have a time change gap! Pick one! Standard time, daylight savings time, or split the difference by setting the clocks back half an hour tonight and leaving them there! We don’t want to be behind the Russians, do we?

I’m glad it’s over…at least for a while. It seems they begin DST earlier and earlier in the year and end it later and later.

I agree with all the comments so far, and that it’s a ridiculous anachronism. Another thing, anecdotal of course, is that the only people I’ve met that are vociferously in favor of DST are workaholic right-wing assholes. I hate Calvanists.

Oregon passed a law to stay on daylight time year-round – but it only goes into effect when Washington (passed) and California (not yet) have both passed it as well.  And when Congress approves — though I think it should be a state’s rights issue!  How did Arizona get its exception?

@jbnw Arizona is on standard time year-round, which federal law currently allows. The problem is that we want to be on DST year-round, which is currently not allowed (probably because nobody foresaw the possibility that states might want to do it).

Ah, of course – but I want more light at the end of the day.  Last night it was getting dark at 4:30, and I am at the western edge of the time zone.  I grew up in the eastern edge of the time zone, and it would be getting dark around 3:30.  The next eastern time zone was to the SOUTH of me . . .

It could be very pretty – in the eastern edge of the time zone, and a low winter sun, there could be an hour or more of sunset starting around 2 in the afternoon, or even earlier.

It’ll still get dark at night.  And people will be up all hours playing video games, logging onto social media and JackpineRadicals (haha).  So where’s the “saving”?

Pick one and stick with it. I prefer DST, but that’s just me.

Tomorrow I get to make it even worse. I travel to a different time zone. I made a big deal about setting the alarm; I have to walk out of the house at 6:30 am. But only a few minutes ago ago realized I have to change the clock tonight or or I’m going to be an hour late. And I’m only going ahead one hour so it should even out, but not really. Me brain hurts!

This may have made sense in an earlier time, but now when the entire world runs round the clock, a twice a year where-the-sun-is reset is unnecessarily  disruptive.

The voters approved leaving the time alone here in California but we’re still stuck changing it, so much for the will of the people! 😠 I prefer standard time but whichever just choose one and leave the time alone after that!

pick either one and stick with it. do these people really think they can stop the earth’s rotation to suit their arbitrary schedules?

the hour is just a number. i think we should pick a time (gmt seems convenient) and standardize the entire world.

When it is 12 Noon Greenwich Mean Time (GMT – Universal Time), it is, or at least it should be, Midnight on the opposite side of the world. DST messes with this. 12 Midnight is no longer actually 12 Midnight. It is actually 11:00 PM.
GMT, which is internationally accepted, was originally tied to the sun being overhead in Greenwich England, i.e., Noon local sun time. DST messes with this logical concept.
Contrary to what some people actually believe, the sun does not rise and set one hour earlier or later twice a year because a law says it does. These people are deceiving themselves. These are the same people that do not want to get up an hour earlier, so they can go to work an hour earlier and get off an hour earlier so they can party longer on weekends. But they want everyone else to conform to their personal view of what time it is.

Where did the idea of Daylight Savings Time originate?
