(Reuters) – U.S. Democrats claimed an upset win in Kentucky on Tuesday over a Republican governor backed by President Donald Trump and seized control of the state legislature in Virginia, where anti-Trump sentiment in the suburbs remained a potent force.

In Kentucky, Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear, whose father, Steve, was the state’s last Democratic governor, scored a narrow victory over Governor Matt Bevin despite an election-eve rally headlined by Trump.

While the result was a significant setback for Trump, who remains relatively popular in Kentucky, it may have had more to do with Bevin’s diminished standing in the state. Opinion polls showed Bevin may be the least popular governor in the country, after he waged high-profile fights with labor unions and teachers.

Meanwhile, Democrats wrested both chambers of Virginia’s legislature from narrow Republican majorities, which would give the party complete control of the state government for the first time in a quarter-century.

So this looks like the death blow of GOP gerrymandering in Virginia  in the 2020 to sneak out those US house seats.

Yes, I think the Virginia Supreme Court ordered the districts to be more fairly drawn, but I’m not sure. I do recall the Virginia Repubs losing a court case on the issue.

Notice Trump didn’t even bother to campaign in Virginia because he knew it was a lost cause, and he hates to lose. In Kentucky, he waited until the last minute because he was afraid Bevin was going to lose, so he could put the blame on Bevin, which he immediately did. Something like “I almost dragged him across the finish line.”

If he had really thought Bevin would win, he would have shown up a couple of weeks earlier and then taken all of the credit after Bevin won.
