Public school teachers in Florida will soon be required to dedicate at least 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” to teach students about communist leaders around the world and how people suffered under those regimes.

Speaking at Miami’s Freedom Tower before a crowd of local lawmakers and supporters, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 395, which designates Nov. 7 as the state’s official “Victims of Communism Day,” making Florida one of a handful of states to adopt the designation.

It is, however, the first state to mandate school instruction on that day, as Florida Republicans continue to seize on education policy while placing school curriculum at the forefront of their political priorities ahead of the 2022 midterms.

The bill, which DeSantis signed along with two street designations in honor of Cuban exiles, would require the instruction to begin in the 2023-2024 school year. It would require teaching of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro, as well as “poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech” endured under those regimes.

Not that the actual plan isn’t weird.  Hopefully the schools will also teach how capitalism and fascism really do accomplish the same things as those listed under communism.

They will teach the kids that capitalism is the best system EVAH! And that Fascism is bad, but better than Communism.

sarcasm and cynicism.  Which you likely picked up on!  Things are strange here, and I am wondering just who the Dems will tell the party faithful they have chosen to run for governor and senator.

is that millions of people have never died as a result of the imposition of capitalist ideology on the world, which is clearly nonsense.

The fits of violence resulting in shattered countries and societies, and millions of deaths in Korea, Vietnam and throughout the ME — along with the millions who have perished as a result of sanctions — were all the consequences of maintaining the global free market paradigm.

Why Cuba is such a horrible place, with no health care, gangs running wild in the streets,  and so on. They can contemplate this from their perfect paradise in Miami, which is NOT sinking into the ocean, by the way, as leftist propaganda would have us believe.

… coming from the Republicans as usual. I’m guessing there was considerable support from state Democrats as well.

Florida’s Hispanic population is made up of a high number of Cubans, Venezuelans, and central American countries. A lot of these groups are very anti-socialist. They HATE socialism. And they are highly suspicious of Democrats. So DeSantis is playing to these folks with stuff like this. And that’s how DeSantis is. He’s a populist. And he knows how to play the game. He makes it seem like he’s fighting for the average Joe by bucking against the feds, bucking against big companies like Disney, etc.. He knows what he’s doing.

But for one reason or another, the GOP figured out how to gain Hispanic voters in Florida. In 2020, Trump won 45% support from Hispanics in Florida. That’s more than 10 points higher than he did with these voters in the rest of the country. And some recent polling indicates that the GOP may actually now have a majority support from Hispanic voters in Florida. It’s the only state in the country where this is true.

If Democrats hoped Florida would turn blue on demographics alone….the GOP has effectively busted that plan. And right now it seems Florida Democrats are literally lost. They don’t know what to do. The Democrats can’t find traction on any issue in this state. They are behind in the polls issue after issue.
