Coalition forces will leave Iraq, the U.S. military announced Monday, a day after Iraqi lawmakers voted to expel the American military from the country.

“Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement,” says the letter, signed by U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General William H. Seely III.

“We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure,” said Seely.

The authenticity of the letter was reported on Monday by Reuters and a number of other outlets.

As Common Dreams reported, the Iraqi Parliament voted Sunday to expel U.S. forces from the country. That declaration was met with anger from President Donald Trump, who threatened to hammer the war-torn country with sanctions.

On Monday, the U.S. reversed course.

“Uh,” journalist Jack Mirkinson tweeted, “did the Iraq war just end?”

Withdrawing troops from Iraq at the country’s request marks a major moment for the U.S. occupation. U.S. personnel and military have been in the country since the invasion of and war on Iraq that began in 2003 and has continued in one form or another ever since.

“Huge development,” tweeted journalist Daniel Medina.

Last week, U.S. forces assassinated Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike near the Baghdad airport. The attack came after other strikes in the region by U.S. forces and after protests at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq nearly overran the facility.

In a statement minutes after the announcement, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a leading candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, questioned the point of the war after 16 years of conflict.

“After 16 years of war in Iraq, after the expenditure of trillions of dollars, after the deaths of 4500 U.S. troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, the Iraqi government is now trying to throw us out of their country,” said Sanders. “All of that suffering, all of that death, all of that huge expenditure of money, for what?”

HuffPost editor-in-chief Lydia Polgreen, on Twitter, opined that the withdrawal could mean the 16-year conflict is finally at an end.

“Well, I guess the Iraq war is over?” said Polgreen.

No.  From what I can tell either the letter or story are fake – or someone got their wires crossed.  Esper responded, basically saying we are not going anywhere.

Either the letter is a complete forgery or someone has a lot of explaining to do.

Reuters first reported the letter. Most likely it’s a forgery. Kind of surprised Reuters ran with it without further verification but then again nothing is really surprising anymore…

A pity. If our troops were kicked out, it could be a two-fer:

    1. Iraqis would finally get their country back.

    2. The Warmonger-in-Chief and his enablers would lose a key potential staging area for any conflict with Iran.

My guess is that someone is going to get fired.

I was surprised by the letter too – and almost immediately suspicious.  Seemed like something someone higher up should have announced.  Well, now we know.

It is odd though, that this one got out so quickly and was so quickly refuted.

Looks like the military is now claiming letter was a “draft” and the release was a mistake:

Be nice if we did get out of Iraq. Look at what happened to Viet Nam, when we left!

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.

If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.

Both major political parties are special interest groups enabling each other for power and money, at the expense of the people they no longer properly serve…

If I were commanding those forces, I would finagle a way to leave without Trump knowing. Maybe go hide in Malaga and send daily dispatches detailing progress against Iranian led militants.

This shit keeps getting weirder and weirder… either someone is trying to do something devious, or a bunch of idiots just did something tremendously stupid.  Or both.  This is a total wtf moment.

Thanks for posting this. I had just posted the letter on a Bernie Sanders supporter Facebook page. I went back and deleted it after reading your post. Can’t get too complicated on Facebook!

Worse than getting someone getting fired, we are now an occupied force in the center of a country that is hostile to our  occupation.  The occupants of the Alamo had better odds.

Plus, we have no moral authority, and few supporters for staying there. At least the occupants of West Berlin had the western world on their side to fly in supplies in support of freedom.

My guess is that this letter was leaked on purpose

    to test the results.

The letter is GENUINE.  It was an UNSIGNED DRAFT that was never meant to be sent without approval.  How it became public ….. who knows?!!!!

But now the Iraqi parliament has voted for the Americans to leave….. and the Americans say they are staying.

So much for the “SOVEREIGN” state of Iraq!
