      And that is a problem. She’s not even Latina. She has some Asian heritage, which the Democrats believe makes her a woman of color. Nope. It is true that Asians suffered terrible discrimination and persecution in the United States. Trivia: at the behest of the railroads, Oregon enacted a law that specifically made it not a crime to kill a Chinese person. Asians are not regarded as much of color by other people of color who regard themselves as more of color. Yes, it’s another version of the old debate about who’s authentically black. Asians do too well. Their dragon mommies make them learn to play the violin and piano, go to Harvard and Stanford, graduate cum laude, and become doctors and lawyers. They are over-achievers, and this doesn’t buy them what they need in the identity politics world of the Democratic Party. The party has benefitted from identity politics by relying heavily, very heavily on black voters, and they expect a black vice presidential candidate. Frankly, they deserve one, considering how often they pull the party’s nuts out of the fire. Duckworth may not perceived as a “woman of color,” although it will be impossible to say so in public. But Duckworth might cause black voters to stay home on election day, particularly since Biden has been sniffing the hair of so many black women. Of course, the Democrats are considering whether Duckworth might be “of color” enough to qualify, which would be great because Asians do not scare white people very much. But identity politics is confining, and the party has painted itself into a corner.

      Also, if she was born in Thailand, then with Biden gone, we will have a President who is not born in the US.

        But given that she’s half Asian, this will of course lead Cheeto & the MAGAtts to bring up the same “birther” dragonshit that they threw at Barry Obama for years, even after his birth in Hawaii was well documented.

        I don’t think it’s particularly wise to hand those idiots a fake “scandal” right away, but of course that would keep Dementia Joe & the Turd Wayers from having to actually talk about issues, so they probably would think it’s a “good” political strategy.

        Honestly, I haven’t followed Duckworth’s political career all that closely, but as far as I know, she’s what passes for a “mainstream Democrat” these days. Certainly not in the Bernie/AOC end of the party, but not in the Feinstein/Pelosi end either. The one thing you can definitely say about her is that she knows first hand what the costs of the idiotic PNAC wars are.

        I doubt she will be the VP pick, but she would probably be a better choice than most of the names on Joe’s alleged “short list” (the CIA stooge who got Benghazi wrong, the nobody cop from Florida, Neera’s puppet from GA, Scamala, etc.)

          Didn’t Congress hold a special vote to allow McCain to run? Maybe they didn’t have to but as I recall there was a vote.

            I do seem to recall some discussion of the issue when George Romney – governor of Michigan & father of Mittens – was considering a run for the Presidency in 1968. George was born in Mexico to two white parents who were the children of Utah Mormons who self-exiled to Mexico, rather than give up their spare wives when Utah had to officially ban polygamy to become a state. I don’t remember all the specifics of how these voluntary exiles were able to retain US citzenship, but somehow George was able to claim US citzenship, despite being 2nd generation of Mexican born Mormons. Maybe if he had gone further in the Presdiential race, it would have been called into question. Can’t imagine Nixon & the Bush Crime Family NOT exploiting something like that!

      She’s not only black, she’s a warmongering neoliberal black. The perfect technocrat. Sometimes I think the Democrats should just change their name to the Technocratic Party, since they are definitely not democratic.

      @salemcourt Although it doesn’t state specifically he was, it implies he was. (From Wikipedia.)

      Tammy Duckworth was born in Bangkok, Thailand, the daughter of Lamai Sompornpairin and Franklin Duckworth. Her father, who died in 2005, was a U.S. Army veteran[5][better source needed] who traced his family’s American roots to the American Revolutionary War.[6] Her mother is Thai Chinese.[7] Because of her father’s work with the United Nations and international companies in refugee, housing, and development programs,[8]the family moved around Southeast Asia. Duckworth became fluent in Thai and Indonesian, in addition to English.[9]

      If that is correct, she is considered a natural born citizen, and is eligible to be President.

      I found it.

      Apr 30, 2008 (Resolution Agreed to by Senate).

      S.Res. 511 (110th): A resolution recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen.

        Written by Claire McAsshole, with Barry & Hillary as co-sponsors??

        Seems like the so-called “Democrats” were more interested in helping McCain than his fellow (admitted) Republicans.

        Coburn being the exception, apparently.

      @coldmountaintrail I hold no illusions about the calculations of the centrist Democrats. They are doing polls and focus groups right now to tell them how an Asian-American woman would be received by African-American voters. They do more than inform themselves of the stereotypes I included; they bow down to them. Their computers are telling them how many percentage points up or down the support of each identity group will go in response to choosing a candidate from a particular demographic. If black voters perceive Asians as too successful to qualify as “being of color,” the data will reveal how much, and Duckworth will be off the list if the number is too high. Unless the difference is made up by white voters in flyover country. Keep in mind, we’re looking at a political party that believes in winning according to Vince Lombardi’s old quip, “Wining is not everything. It’s the only thing.”

      @gordyfl

      There was no question at all that McCain met the citizenship criteria to run for president, so whatever that bill was about, it wasn’t about making him eligible to run.

      McCain was born in the (then US) Panama Canal Zone, & both his father & mother were US born.  Both his father & grandfather were 4-star Navy Admirals as well.

      The Panama Canal Zone (Spanish: Zona del Canal de Panamá) was an unincorporated territory of the United States from 1903 to 1979, centered on the Panama Canal and surrounded by the Republic of Panama.[1] The zone consisted of the canal and an area generally extending five miles (8.0 km) on each side of the centerline, excluding Panama City and Colón, which otherwise would have been partly within the limits of the Zone. Its border spanned three of Panama’s provinces. When reservoirs were created to assure a steady supply of water for the locks, those lakes were included within the Zone.

        Apparently the Naval Base where the McCains lived did not have a hospital equipped for baby deliveries, so he was actually born at a hospital within the city of Colon, which is just south of the previous Canal Zone’s border & across the Limon Bay from the Naval Base.

        So he actually was not born on US soil (real or imaginary, as the Canal Zone was) but his parents were both US citizens. So it’s just the “natural born” part that was nebulous, not the citizenship.

        The only reason it probably ever got a mention at all is because McCain -who actually WAS born outside the US – was running against Obama in 2008 when all the ridiculous “Kenya” dragonshit was being thrown around. McCain, to his credit, didn’t get involved in any of that. Which is more than you can say for Hillary & her PUMA cult, who helped start the rumor in the first place.

      @redcloud

      If only those born in the US were eligible, and only those at least 35 years old were eligible, then there would have been no one who could serve as President until 1811 at the earliest.

      Even without having access to the internet, someone at the Philadelphia convention figured this out.  Anyone who was a citizen at the time of the adoption of the Constitution was eligible.  Specifically, from Article II, Section 1, Clause 5:

      No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President….

      Trivia time: The first President born after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence was Martin Van Buren (born December 5, 1782).
