(AFP) The accelerating death toll from the coronavirus epidemic sweeping the globe surged past 20,000 in Europe on Saturday, with hardest-hit Italy and Spain both reporting more than 800 dead in a single day.
As many as one-third of the world’s population is now living under lockdown and US President Donald Trump says he is considering placing New York state under “quarantine”, as the Chinese city where the outbreak began has begun to return to normality.

However, two months of almost total isolation appear to have paid off in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the virus first emerged.

But on Saturday people were allowed to enter the city and most of the subway network restarted. Some shopping centres will open their doors next week.

China really jumped on top of this thing. They did extensive screening, testing and isolation. We are not even serious about screening and testing yet. China took aggressive action in the early phase of the epidemic. We did not. That suggests we will have more people sick with the virus, for a longer time. If luck is with us, the virus may run its course without a huge number of illnesses, but that’s unlikely. It shows every indication of acting like the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918, where we had no vaccination and no effective treatment. The danger is that our president will look at Wuhan reopening and decide we can do it if they can do it.

The most stringent of American quarantines doesn’t come close to what China did in Wuhan, and they accepted all the help they could get from the WHO and other countries in manufacturing test kits. Trump rejected the WHO’s offer.
China also has a functional national health system and manufacturing base. We don’t have anything like the former and have to convert plants to do the latter, which has only just begun. We’re all too little, too late. It is very possible that we will lose over a million people before this is over. @hasslecat

With the stories of people who were recovered and negative coming up testing positive again in Wuhan, lets see what happens.
After all, there is still no vaccine or generally accepted treatments yet.

Some of them did open, but in less than a day they were told to close immediately. Apparently, someone from the general population tested positive again for Covid-19.

I don’t believe China. COVID-19 is crushing their economy. They will lie, same as Dump, to appear ‘open for business.’

This is true…good observation. We, the people, mean nothing to those in charge…NOTHING! They will lie and so will Trump.

hearing about the suppression of Hong Kong protesters, and having a Chinese office mate who lost many family members during the Cultural Revolution, I find it hard to believe ANYTHING coming out of the mouths of the current Chinese regime.
“There’s a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of ‘grab and greed’ are on their way out. We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)

If there are no further widespread outbreaks in China, then you will have your answer on this topic.
@artfromark Or would you not believe the WHO’s reports from China? Trump didn’t like what they were saying and turned down their offer of test kits, you know. The WHO and China. Just like he turned down Cuba’s offer of doctors.
I don’t take either the Russians or the Chinese at their word any more than I believe anything Trump says without independent confirmation. Just saying the Chinese will be mostly truthful if it serves their interests at the time. In fact, they’re better at using actual facts than our own government is anymore.
Trump and the Democrats both just make shit up, even when they don’t have to.
