For every additional 0.5 degree Celsius of warming, the IPCC report warns there will be an expected increase in the frequency and intensity of heavy rain events, as well as agricultural and ecological droughts. More warming also brings the increasing chance of concurrent disasters, such as heat waves and droughts occurring at the same time.

But as bad as things can get, the report stresses that swift and aggressive action on climate change can even reverse some of its effects. A rapid effort to not just stop emitting greenhouse gases but also pull them out of the air, achieving negative emissions, would spur a reversal in surface temperatures and surface ocean acidification.

Based on the behaviours I see regularly, it’s hard for me to be optimistic about most people agreeing to do anything that would even slightly inconveninece them if there’s not an immediate return. I’ve had a few run-ins recently with people tossing their masks on the street. It’s mind-boggling to me. One person was slightly embarrassed and pointed out that the nearest trash can was full. I said, Yeah, that’s why I’m still wearing the mask and will throw it away at home. I also mentioned that you should break the loops on the masks before disposing of them, so that animals don’t get stuck in them. She then said, “Well, that’s not really my problem,” and walked away. At least she picked up the mask, but her comment was very typical: It’s not really my problem. We see this over and over. Until it’s *their* problem and it’s right in their faces, they see no need to change. Of course, once it IS their problem, they expect everyone else to drop what they’re doing and help them, never accepting that they could have prevented this themselves if they hadn’t been so selfish.
