“From each according to his ability; to each according to his need.”

Fire departments are generaly supported by property taxes. The more your property is worth, the more you pay. But they won’t send a truck out unless you actually have a fire.

This is how all public goods operate. conservatives are people who don’t want to pay for public goods that don’t benefit them personally

There were private fire companies. If you were not paid up on your subscription, they would not respond to your fire. There were some unintended consequences. Sometimes, they would allow a fire to run out of control because the owner couldn’t pay, only to have the fire destroy houses of their paying customers. Oops! There was also a good deal of criminal activity because fire companies were motivated to sabotage competitors by setting their customers’ houses on fire. The obvious lesson is that private enterprise cannot be trusted to deliver public services without serious oversight. For essential services like fire protection, the only reasonable way to go is socialism.

that’s how Crassus became history’s richest person (helping Octavian turn Rome from a city of brick to a city of marble)

then he got captured and the Persians poured melted gold into his mouth to kill him

At least the pandemic has proven beyond all doubt that capitalist health care is an unmitigated disaster.
