      From Reuters at https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/first-lady-not-president-biden-likely-visit-japan-games-paper-2021-06-27/ :

TOKYO, June 27 (Reuters) – Japan and the United States are making arrangements for First Lady Jill Biden to visit Japan for the Tokyo Olympics, but President Biden is not likely to accompany her, the Yomiuri Shimbun daily said on Sunday.

Attending the opening ceremony, set for July 23, and holding a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga are among the possible events the two governments are looking into for her, the newspaper said, without specifying sources.

Japan is the United States’ major ally in Asia, and President Biden has expressed his support for Suga’s resolve to hold the Games amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This bothers me. No one voted for her and she has no government position I know of to represent the United States.

If we want to send a diplomatic representative, we have plenty of diplomats and elected officials.

If she’s accompanying the President, fine, but otherwise I don’t want to pay for private citizen Jill Biden’s vacation in Japan.

If Joe Biden can’t do his job, he should resign.

It’s a purely ceremonial occasion. A person of high visibility representing the United States.

I’m not sure presidents and prime ministers and such attend these things.

it’s just a fancy-dress holiday on the government dime.

      Perhaps a courtesy call? 😉

as she holds no official position in the US government beyond wife-of-the-President.
Her attendance at the opening ceremony (or any other ceremonial event) is an accepted extension of the role since Martha W. was choosing wallpaper, but “holding a meeting” – if indeed that’s what she will do – is pushing it a step too far (imo).

but given his age, and the widely-held belief here in Japan that people his age are particularly vulnerable to Covid , I can imagine that it was the Japanese side that talked him out of coming and maybe even suggested that his wife attend in his place.

      From the Asahi Shimbun:
       米政府は、12年のロンドン五輪ではオバマ大統領の妻ミシェル氏が開会式に出席。16年のリオデジャネイロ五輪にはケリー国務長官、18年の平昌(ピョンチャン)冬季五輪にはペンス副大統領をそれぞれ派遣している。

But I still prefer officials like Secretaries of State and Vice Presidents – and I believe Jill Biden has talked with foreign officials on phone calls, but I can’t find the references at the moment.

For example, here is an article from the Nikkei Keizai Shimbun (Japan’s version of the Wall Street Journal) which talks about the death of “First Dog” Champ, and shows a picture of Jill petting the dog.

Do a Google image search of ” バイデン夫人 ” and you might get a better idea of her press coverage here.

Also, an article from the Sankei Shimbun contains this little nugget:

          首相が4月に訪米した際、バイデン氏は通訳のみを交えた一対一の会談で家族の写真を見せながら一人ひとりについて説明した。ジル夫人の来日により「家族ぐるみ」の付き合いで、首脳間の個人的信頼関係を強固にしたい考えだ。

During his visit to the US in April, the Prime Minister had a one-on-one conversation with Mr. Biden through an interpreter in which he showed pictures of his family and explained about each member. Mrs. Jill’s visit to Japan may be a way of “meeting family members” and strengthening the individual relationship of trust between the leaders of the two countries.

Also, take a good look at the picture in the article.

How embarrassing. Though if they had sent Fascist Joe, that might have been even worse. Oh well, better for them to be in Japan than in Ohio, I suppose.

The oatmeal has compelled Jill Biden to go to Japan. Let’s hope it doesn’t control her when she speaks. Be on the watch for her to uncontrollably blurt out “Malarkey!”, or to not be able to resist sniffing some Japanese hair.
