ORLANDO — Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) is coming under intense scrutiny from progressives over her record as Orlando police chief a decade ago, posing a potential hurdle to her prospects of becoming Joe Biden‘s running mate.

Biden is facing growing pressure to pick an African-American woman as his vice president following nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

And many Democrats have pointed to Demings, a second-term Florida congresswoman, as someone who could straddle the emotional divide over police reform: a former police chief who can speak personally about police brutality and systemic racism against blacks but who insulates Democrats from GOP charges they are soft-on-crime liberals.

But as Demings’s star rises, some Black Lives Matter (BLM) and other progressive activists are taking aim at her tenure as Orlando’s first female police chief, which spanned 2007 to 2011, and they are questioning whether someone who spent a decades-long career in law enforcement is right for this moment.

Instead of picking people because of their skin color, gender or fund raising ability, how about picking people for their competence and leadership abilities?

        I’m with you.

I would like to remind you that U.S. health insurance companies do not contribute anything to health care. They are only a PARASITIC middle man receiving an undeserved cut of "FREE MONEY".

I thought the whole idea of civil rights and equality is that we would get rid of tokenism.

Whoever told Biden to announce so far in advance that he’s picking a woman as his running mate ought to be fired. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Given Biden’s age and obvious mental decline, there’s an excellent chamce he’d never see out even one term. In his case the Veep spot is especially important and needs to be filled by someone the voters know and are comfortable with — not someone who checks a box. Women running mates have been on national tickets twice before, and in both cases the ticket went down to defeat. Don’t even have to mention what happened when a woman headed the ticket against a horrible Repuke opponent. I wish we lived in a country in which women were truly treated as the equals of men and sexism didn’t exist. But we don’t. The focus ought to be on the best person for the job, not the best woman for the job. Voters will be paying attention.

She is a perfect choice right now. She’s a black woman who used her legal authority to get tough on black criminals. She would be the darling of the white suburbs. I have seen her on TV only once, but it’s clear she can talk her way around the question well enough to give an answer to the question she wants to answer, not the question asked. Like Joe Biden, her past activity is easily forgiven. And she’s from the south, so she motivates black voters where the Democrats need them motivated. This makes her a better choice than Kamala Harris, who is similar, but is a west coaster and the west coast is already safely Biden’s.

Selecting someone who is likely to attract the most votes is the goal.

Black woman, ex cop, from a state that Joe needs?   She checks all the “liberal” boxes but isn’t “too liberal”.   Well educated, married, 3 kids.

She’s be a good pick…politically speaking, and maybe even make a good president if Biden leaves office.

@bazukhov Who knows? Maybe there will be enough older people to bow down before their misleadership class and get Biden in office, but Deming’s not the way to go to get the vote of anyone who thinks the cops are the hooligans they really are.

She isn’t a good pick. She’s an insulting pick. She was a fucking police chief. Of a department that had 3500 documented cases of police brutality on her watch. She should be exiled, not elected.

DNC Suit one: “How can we absolutely throw away Dementia Joe’s double digit lead in the polls and lose to this fucking walking circus peanut again??”

DNC Suit two: “Why don’t we put a COP on the ticket? Somebody that 99% of the country has never heard of. From a state that is ALWAYS stolen by the Bush Crime Family/CIA machine that’s been in charge since the late 1950s”

DNC Suit one: “That’s brilliant! And when we lose AGAIN, we can blame the Russians. Or Bernie Bros. Or “sexists” who don’t like nobody cops”
